Bronx, N.Y. – (January 26, 2025) – After dropping its opening match of the weekend, the Fordham squash team rebounded to win four matches in a row at the Lombardi Squash Courts to improve to 13-5 on the season.
On Saturday, the Rams won all three matches against Washington & Lee, Johns Hopkins, and Northeastern.
Fordham defeated Washington & Lee, 8-1, to open the day, led by top player
Bennett Van Liew, as he outlasted Hansen Ogden in five games, 11-13, 11-2, 10-12, 11-5, and 11-4.
The Rams then won at third through ninth positions, beginning with
Adam Sakr topping John Williams in five games at third position, 11-8, 6-11, 3-11, 12-10, and 11-9, while
Robert Cruikshank defeated John Mullin at fourth position, 11-8, 11-7, and 11-7.
Charlie Friedman (5
th),
Nathan Martinez (6
th), Sofi Arseniev (7
th),
Joe Walsh (8
th), and
Crispin McCarthy (9
th), all posted three-game sweeps to close out the match.
Against Johns Hopkins, the Rams went on to win by an 8-1 count.
Van Liew picked up his second win of the weekend, defeating Alex Pomper, 11-9, 11-2, and 11-8, at the top slot. Sakr earned a four-game victory at third position over Kavish Hajarnavis (11-6, 10-12, 11-6, 11-5), while Cruikshank picked up his third win of the weekend over Aryavrat Gupta at the fourth slot (11-6, 11-5, 11-5).
Friedman, Martinez, Arseniev and Walsh made quick work of their opponents, winning the fifth through eighth slot matches in three games respectively. McCarthy put in extra work to win his ninth slot match from Samuel Muzac, taking it in five games, 8-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, and 11-4.
Saturday wrapped up with Fordham posting an 8-1 win over Northeastern.
Already with a 3-0 lead due to defaulted matches, the Rams got wins at first position, as well as third through sixth to complete the win. Van Liew completed a perfect Saturday with a three-game win over Sam Cotsarelis, 11-5, 11-6, and 11-6, as did Cruikshank, who won at third position over Jacob Domber in four games, 11-5, 2-11, 11-9, and 11-9.
Friedman took the fourth slot match from Brady Melnick in three games (11-4, 11-7, 12-10) with Martinez defeating Harrison Seeley at fifth position in four games (9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-6). Arseniev capped the win at sixth position, topping Daniel Yanni, 11-4, 11-4, and 11-5.
The final match of the weekend came on Sunday morning with Fordham taking a 7-2 decision from George Washington.
Sakr had the best win at third position with a victory over Leo-Paul Leger in four games, 10-12, 11-7, 11-7, and 11-4. Friedman also needed four games to win his fifth slot match over Mohammed Hogue, 11-9, 7-11, 12-10, and 11-7.
