Randall's Island, N.Y. – (April 6, 2024) – The Fordham men's track & field team took part in the Metropolitan Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island on Saturday.
Fordham finished second out of 14 teams with a team score of 134.5 points, finishing behind only Rowan University at 196.5 points. It was Fordham's highest men's finish at the Metropolitan Championship since a second place finish in 2019.
The Rams won six track events on the day beginning with
Jack Boerger taking first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:41.46, while the 4x100 relay team of
Liam Volz,
Matthew Nurse,
Eric Galante, and
Dakota Strain grabbed first place in 42.18 seconds.
In the 1,500 meters, Fordham had an amazing run, scoring first, second, fourth, fifth, and seventh.
Colin Flood won the event in 3:59.26, followed by
Rodolfo Sanchez in second (3:59.49),
Steven Zucca in fourth (4:04.28),
Darren Croke in fifth (4:04.97), and
John Corrigan in seventh (4:07.78).
The next Ram to score was
Sam Freeman in the 400-meter dash, placing fifth in 49.50 seconds.
Another big scoring event for Fordham as the 800 meters, as the Rams had a 1-2-3-4 finish.
Yariv Simhony grabbed the top spot in a season-best time of 1:55.90, while Sanchez (1:56.20), Flood (1:56.29), and
Trevor Rinn (1:56.58) were second, third, and fourth, respectively.
After being a part of the Rams relay win in the 4x100, Strain won the 200-meter dash in 22.31 seconds with Nurse scoring sixth in 22.43 seconds.
The final event win came from
Tadael Mihret, as he won the 5,000-meter run in 15:43.04.
In the remaining relays, the Rams scored second in the 4x800 relay with Rinn, Simhony,
Jake Frayler, and Croke clocking in at 8:12.98 with the 4x400 relay of
Christopher Martinez, Strain, Freeman, and Nurse, registering a fourth-place finish in 3:19.95.
Fordham's remaining point scoring came from
Justin Rhee in the long jump and triple jump events along with
DaRon Elam and
George Pomer in the high jump. Rhee scored fourth in the long jump (20' 11 ¼") and sixth in the triple jump (41' 8"), while Elam (6' 2 ¾") and Pomer (5' 10 ¾") were third and tied for sixth, respectively.
The Rams are next in action on April 12-13 at the Larry Ellis Invitational, hosted by Princeton University.
