Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham University men's tennis swept the final Atlantic 10 weekly awards today with sophomore
John Mascone being named the Performer of the Week and freshman
Stephan Mozhaev earning Rookie of the Week honors. It is the first weekly award for each.
Fordham went 2-0 on the week with a 4-3 win over Saint Joseph's on Saturday and a 6-1 victory over New York University on Sunday. Both Mascone and Mozhaev were a perfect 2-0 on the week in singles play.
Mascone defeated Saint Joseph's Stergios Papadopoulo in straight sets at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-1, and NYU's Rumaish Khastgir, 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4).
In doubles action, Mascone teamed with
Giorgio Soemarno to win at second doubles over Saint Joseph's John Butler and Eli Gan-Dy, and NYU's Jingyuan Chen and Louis Frowein, both by 6-3 scores.
Mozhaev was the deciding point in the Saint Joseph's match, defeating Eli Gan-Dy Won, 6-7 (1-7), 7-5, 6-4, at sixth singles for his first collegiate win. He followed that with a straight set win over NYU's Zachary Freier, 6-1, 7-5.
The Rams, seeded ninth, open play at the 2024 Atlantic 10 Championship on Thursday, April 25, as they face eighth-seeded Duquesne at 9:00 a.m. at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
