Philadelphia, Pa. – (March 8-10, 2024) – Members of the Fordham squash team were in Philadelphia to compete in the 2024 CSA Intercollegiate Singles & Doubles Championship this weekend, held at the Arlen Spector U.S. Squash Center.
Nicholas Gilman took part in the singles championship, opening with Rochester's Yash Fadte. Gilman took the opening game, 13-11, but Fadte rallied to win the next three games to advance in four games. The loss put Gilman into the consolation bracket against Cornell's Spencer Yager. It was a tight three-game match with Yager coming out on top, 11-5, 11-8, and 12-10.
In the men's doubles championship,
Bennett Van Liew and
Jack Stanley dropped their lone match to St. Lawrence's Alexander Scott and Trey Denman in four games, 11-8, 11-6, 9-11, and 11-1.
The biggest success for the Rams was the Mixed Doubles Championship and the pairing of
Sofia Arseniev and
Henry Frawley, as they reached the championship semifinals.
Arseniev and Frawley opened with a re-match against their opening opponent from the 2023 Championship, Mina Bahadori and Nate Meyer from Brown Club. The Rams' duo once again took home an opening round win, winning in three games, 11-6, 11-7, and 11-7.
In the round of 16, Arseniev and Frawley rallied from a two games to one deficit to upset Tufts' pairing of Caroline Chin and Youssef Ezzo, 11-7, 4-11, 7-11, 11-5 and 11-8.
The roll continued for Fordham's pairing in the quarterfinals against Chatham's Valentina Della-Maddalena and Alejandro Cruz. Arseniev and Frawley won their second five-game match of the championship, taking the quarterfinal, 8-11, 11-9, 11-3, 10-12, and 12-10.
The run then ended in the championship semifinal against Brown's Rachel Mashek and Blake Roshkoff, as Fordham's Arseniev and Frawley fell in three games, 11-4, 11-8, and 11-4.
