Fordham Announces 25th A-10 Men’s Swimming & Diving Anniversary Team

Ram Fans Make Their Choices for A-10 Anniversary Squad

Bronx, N.Y. – (April 7, 2021) – After three weeks of voting, Fordham fans have selected their choices as the best of the best for the Fordham men's swimming & diving A-10 25th Anniversary Team.
 
Fans were asked to vote on seven different categories, featuring a lot of choices.  In the end, a total of 26 student-athletes have been placed on the team.  The team features multiple Atlantic 10 event champions, and countless school record holders over the years.
 
Here is a deeper look at each individual:
KosugiActionAkira Kosugi (1995-96 – Back/IM/Fly): Though he was here for just one season, Kosugi made it a memorable one, as the 1996 Atlantic 10 Championship Most Outstanding Performer.  He was the conference champion in the 100 butterfly, 200 individual medley, and 200 medley relay, while adding a silver medal in the 400 medley relay and a bronze medal in the 100 backstroke.  A 1996 Japanese Olympic Trial qualifier, Kosugi set school records in the 200 and 400 medley relays, 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly, and 200 individual medley, and was inducted into the Fordham Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010. DeloDivingPaul Delo (1994-97 – Diving): Delo was the A-10 diving champion at both of the Championships he competed in.  He won the one-meter and three-meter events at the 1996 ad 1997 Championship, receiving the league's Most Outstanding Diver Award in 1997 (There was no award in 1996).  He was an NCAA Zone Diving qualifier in his two seasons in the Atlantic 10, setting all the school diving records.  Delo was also selected to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team in 1996, while setting the league record for scoring in the one-meter event in 1997.
BoboDivingMatt Bobo (1993-97 – Diving): In his two seasons at the Atlantic 10 Championship, Bobo was a top eight performer in both diving events.  In 1996, he finished seventh in the one-meter competition and eighth on the three-meter board.  The following year, Bobo improved to seventh in the three-meter competition, while being eighth on the one-meter board. KeillorActionCollin Keillor (1993-97 – Sprint Freestyle): In his two seasons at the Atlantic 10 Championship, Keillor was a two-time medalist, setting school records in both medley relay events in 1996.  He was a part of the winning 200 medley relay which set the school and conference records, while grabbing silver with the school record 400 medley relay.  Individually, he also scored sixth in the 50 freestyle and seventh in the 100 freestyle that season.  In 1997, he scored fifth in both medley relay events, seventh in the 100 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay, and 12th in the 50 freestyle.
CPorterActionCarlo Porter (1995-98 – Breaststroke): Porter made an immediate impact at his first Atlantic 10 Championship by winning the 100 breaststroke event in school record time, while being a part of the winning 200 medley relay, which set both the school and Atlantic 10 records.  He also earned a silver medal with the school record 400 medley relay that season.  Porter also scored at the 1997 and 1998 Championships in the 200 breaststroke (1997 – 6th) and 100 breaststroke (1998 – 12th). BurkeActionSean Burke (1995-99 – Breaststroke): Burke was a five-time medalist for the Rams at the Atlantic 10 Championship, beginning with him being a part of the winning 200 medley relay in school and A-10 records in 1996, while picking up a silver medal with the school record 400 medley relay.  He was also fifth overall in the 200 breaststroke that year.  In 1997, he was the bronze medalist in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, setting the Rams' record in the 100 event.  After a pair of top tens as a junior (T4th – 100 breast; 10th – 200 breast), he picked up his final medal in 1999 with the 200 medley relay (bronze), while also scoring sixth in the 400 medley relay and tenth in the 100 breaststroke.
TonyDualActionTony Dual (1995-99 – IM/Distance Free): Dual rates as one of the best all-around performers in team history and one of the few two-time Atlantic 10 champions.  A four-time medalist in the 400 individual medley, he won the event at the 1997 and 1999 Championships, while earning silver in 1996 and bronze in 1998.  Additionally, he scored in the 200 individual medley event twice in 1998 (9th) and 1999 (4th), the 500 freestyle twice in 1996 (4th) and 1997 (7th), and the 1650 freestyle once in 1999 (11th).  Dual was also a mainstay on the 800 freestyle relay, scoring fifth in 1996 and sixth in 1997 and 1999. BrianMcHughActionBrian McHugh (1996-2000 – IM): McHugh scored at each of the final three Atlantic 10 Championships, he competed in.  He scored 15th in the 400 individual medley in 1998, and improved to 11th in 1999, while also scoring 15th in the 200 individual medley.  He had his best finish at the 2000 Championship, taking sixth in the 200 individual medley, as well as 12th in the 400 IM event.
SpearDivingJ.P. Spear (1998-2002 – Diving): Spear was a four-year scorer for the Rams at the Atlantic 10 Championship and a member of the Commissioner's Honor Roll.  After taking 12th (1M) and 13th (3M) in 1999, he improved to 11th in both diving competitions as a sophomore in 2000.  In his final two seasons, Spear cracked the top eight in both diving events, taking seventh (1M) and eighth (3M) in 2001, while having a career-best sixth place finish in 2002 on the one-meter board to go with an eighth place finish on the three-meter board. Callaraaction0708Donato "Donnie" Callara (2004-08 – Diving): Callara is right alongside Paul Delo as the most accomplished divers in Fordham history.  He took bronze in every Atlantic 10 Championship diving competition from 2004 to 2008, except for the one-meter dive in 2008, when he earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors and a silver medal.  He broke all of Delo's school records and was an NCAA Zone Diving qualifier in 2005.  Callara also earned a spot on the Academic All-Conference team twice in 2007 and 2008.
RCoombsAction0809Ryan Coombs (2006-10 – Butterfly/Distance Free): Coombs was the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championship Most Outstanding Rookie Performer after winning the 500 freestyle event, while being Second Team All-Atlantic 10 in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 1650 freestyle.  He added to his medal count in 2009 & 2010 as the conference champion in the 200 butterfly event at both Championships, while earning three bronze medals (2009 – 200 medley relay; 2010 – 400 medley & 400 freestyle relay).  Coombs would also earn three selections to the Academic All-Conference team (2008-10) and finish with four relay records (200 & 400 medley relay; 200 & 400 freestyle relay). BColtonAction0910Billy Colton (2007-11 – Backstroke/Sprint Free): Colton was a three-time All-Atlantic 10 performer, earning a total of 10 medals in his career.  As a sophomore, he earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors as a part of the 200 and 400 freestyle relays while being a bronze medalist in the 100 backstroke and 200 medley relay.  He also earned a spot on the Academic All-Conference Team that season.  Colton added a pair of bronze medals to his collection in 2010 in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, while being fourth in the 100 backstroke, sixth in the 50 freestyle, and seventh in the 200 backstroke.  He capped his career with Second Team All-Atlantic 10 accolades in the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays in 2011, as well as bronze medals in the 100 backstroke and 400 freestyle relay and school records in the 200 and 400 medley relays.
GitmanAction0910Robert Gitman (2007-11 – Backstroke): Gitman was a four-year performer at the Atlantic 10 Championship, finishing in the top six nine times.  After placing just off the podium in his first two years with two fourth place and two fifth place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 400 medley relay, he earned a pair of bronze medals at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship in the 100 backstroke and 200 medley relay, while adding a fourth place finish in the 200 backstroke.  He ended his career with a fifth-place time in the 200 backstroke in 2011, while being selected to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team. MorrisAction1112Devon Morris (2009-13 – Sprint Free): Morris was a medalist at the Atlantic 10 Championship in three of his four appearances, beginning in 2010 with a bronze medal as a part of the 200 freestyle relay.  As a sophomore, he earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors with the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relay teams, while taking bronze in the 400 freestyle relay.  Individually, he scored for the first time, placing seventh in the 50 freestyle and eighth in the 10 freestyle.  Morris then broke out at the 2012 Championships, winning gold in the 50 freestyle event in school and conference record times, while also taking first with the 200 freestyle relay, which also set a school record.  He also earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in the 100 freestyle with a school record performance and was selected to the Academic All-Conference team.  Though slowed by injury as a senior, he still managed to score seventh in the 50 freestyle and ninth in the 100 event at the 2013 A-10 Championship.
DwyerAction1213Ben Dwyer (2010-14 – Breaststroke): Dwyer was one of the most consistent performers for the Rams, scoring in all eight breaststroke events over the course of his career.  He opened his career by taking seventh in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events in 2011 and followed by placing fifth in both events in 2012.  As a junior, he set the school record in the 100 breaststroke, scoring eighth overall, while also being a part of the school record 400 medley relay, which was fifth overall.  He then added two more records as a senior in the 200 breaststroke, where he was ninth overall, and the 200 medley relay, which was fourth. NoguchiAction1112Shintaro Noguchi (2010-14 – Sprint Free/Butterfly): Noguchi is another multiple event champion for the Rams at the Atlantic 10 Championship.  His first season at Fordham got off on the right foot in 2011, earning Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in the 100 butterfly, 400 medley relay, and 200 freestyle relay, while garnering a bronze medal in the 400 freestyle relay.  Year two saw Noguchi become the Atlantic 10 champion in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle relay events, while receiving Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in the 200 butterfly.  He then repeated as the conference champion in the 100 butterfly as a junior, setting the conference and school record, while being fourth in the 200 butterfly event.  He ended his career by resetting the school record in the 100 butterfly to earn Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors, as well as scoring fifth in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 200 medley and freestyle relays.  He finished his career as the school record holder in both butterfly events to go with four relay records.

Pat Militti (2011-15 – Butterfly): Militti scored in both butterfly events at each Atlantic 10 Championship that he appeared in.  After finishing 11th in the 200 butterfly and 13th in the 100 butterfly as a freshman, he improved to eighth place in the 200 fly in 2013, while repeating his 13th place finish in the 100 butterfly.  Additionally, he was a part of the school record 400 medley relay in 2013, which placed fifth overall.  Militti followed with 13th (200 fly) and 15th (100 fly) place finishes as a junior, while ending his career in 10th (100 fly) and 13th (200 fly) over in 2015.
SholdraAction1314Steve Sholdra (2012-16 – Butterfly/Distance Free/IM): One of the most accomplished overall swimmers in team history, Sholdra was an A-10 event champion in three different specialties over the course of his career, setting multiple records, and was a three-time Academic All-Conference selection.  He began his career as the Atlantic 10 champion in the 1650 freestyle in 2013, setting school records in the 500, 1000, and 1650 freestyle events.  Additionally, he was fifth in the 400 individual medley and 12th in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle.  After four top tens as a sophomore, Sholdra once again found the awards podium in 2015, winning the 400 IM, while being Second Team All-Atlantic 10 in the 200 butterfly and a bronze medalist in the 1650 freestyle.  He finished his career as a dual event champion in 2016, winning the 400 IM and the 200 butterfly, setting school records in both events.  He also earned a bronze medal in the 500 freestyle in school record time.
MattoxAction1516Miguel Mattox (2013-17 – Backstroke): Mattox was a four-year performer at the Atlantic 10 Championship, scoring individually at three of the Championships.  After being 12th in the 100 and 200 backstroke in 2016, he had career-best performances in 2017, placing seventh in the 100 backstroke, and ninth in the 200 backstroke, and set the school record in the 200 backstroke.  A senior year captain, he also was a part of the school record 200 medley relay that year, which scored fifth overall. MercurioAction3Joe Mercurio (2013-18 – Sprint Free/Fly): Mercurio worked his way up the Atlantic 10 ladder to become an event champion and a seven-time medalist over the course of his career.  After being a consistent scorer in the 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, and relay events at the 2014 and 2015 Championship, he took a huge forward at the 2017 Championship.  He became the Atlantic 10 champion in the 50 freestyle event, while earning a pair of bronze medals in the 200 medley and freestyle relays.  In 2018, Mercurio was Second Team All-Atlantic 10 in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly events and once again a bronze medalist in the 200 medley and freestyle relays.  He set school records in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly as well as in four relay events (200 & 400 MR; 200 & 400 FR R).
SempleAction1516Liam Semple (2014-18 – Distance Free): Competing at two Atlantic 10 Championships in his career, Semple made an impact in each.  In 2015, he set the school record in the 500 freestyle, placing fifth overall, while grabbing seventh in the 1650 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay.  Then as a junior in 2017, he became an Atlantic 10 champion, winning the 1650 freestyle event, while being fifth in the 500 freestyle.  Semple also helped the 400 and 800 freestyle relays both set school record, placing sixth and fourth, respectively. VizzaActionJoseph Vizza (2016-19 – Freestyle): Whether it was in a sprint or distance event, Vizza was a top performer in any freestyle event he competed in over his three seasons.  As a freshman, he was a Second Team All-Atlantic 10 performer in the 200 freestyle event, while capturing four bronze medals in the 100 and 500 freestyle, the 200 freestyle relay, and the 400 medley relay.  He added to his medal count as a sophomore with three more bronze medals in the 100 freestyle, 200 medley relay, and 200 freestyle relay, while being ninth in the 200 freestyle and tying for tenth in the 50 freestyle.  He wrapped his Fordham stay by scoring in the top ten in six events (two individual and four relays), while posting school records in the 100, 200, and 500 freestyle, while having a hand in all five school record relay teams.
Greg Lombana swims the breaststrokeGreg Lombana (2016-20 – IM): A four-year member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, Lombana graduated as the team's school record holder in the 200 individual medley.  A 2017 Second Team All-Atlantic 10 performer in the 400 IM, he ended up scoring seventh in the 400 IM in 2019, while placing 15th in the 200 IM.  As a senior, he scored 13th in the 400 IM event. SleutjesAction20Christopher Sleutjes (2016-20 – Distance Freestyle): A four-year member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, Sleutjes scored in the distance freestyle events at both the 2017 and 2019 Atlantic 10 Championships.  His best finish was sixth in the 1650 freestyle event in 2017, while placing 13th in the 500 and 1650 freestyle at the 2019 Championship.  Consistently one of the team's top distance performers and a former team captain, Sleutjes was twice named to the Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team (2019 & 2020).
Scott SternScott Stern (2017-present – Backstroke): A three-year member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, Stern served as a team captain for the squad and competed at the Atlantic 10 Championship three times.  His best performance came in 2019, when he scored individually in the 200 backstroke (16th) and the 200 medley relay (8th). Patrick WilsonPatrick Wilson (2019-present – Breaststroke): After transferring to Fordham, Wilson cemented his spot as one of the top breaststrokers in program history, setting school records in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events.  In his lone A-10 Championship appearance in 2020, he was sixth in the 100 breaststroke and ninth in the 200 breaststroke, while helping the 200 and 400 medley relays place eighth and fifth, respectively.
