Cross Country Has Strong Showing at Metropolitan Championship

Women Win Metropolitan Championship for the Ninth Time, while Men Take Second; Fordham’s Bridget Alex & Brandon Hall Take Top Individual Honors

Bronx, N.Y. – (October 9, 2021) – On a picture perfect morning at Van Cortlandt Park, the Fordham cross country teams played host to the 2021 Metropolitan Cross Country Championship and performed very well.
 
The Fordham women started the day by capturing their third Metropolitan Championship in the last six years, and ninth overall, with a team score of 33 points.  St. John's was second with 87 points, followed by Seton Hall (88), Columbia (111), Manhattan (113), NYU (130), NJIT (158), and Saint Peter's (205).
 
Individually, Fordham's Bridget Alex posted the top time, winning the 5K race in a time of 19:20.3.  She is the first Ram to take the top spot in the women's race since Lauren Gubicza in 1992.
 
Behind Alex, Fordham scored four more runners in the top ten finishers, starting with Alexandra Thomas in fifth with a time of 19:45.2.  Nicoleta Papavasilakis (19:57.5), Taylor Mascetta (19:59.5), and Germaine Harbaugh (20:01.0) then placed eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively.
 
Caroline McDonagh was the next Ram across the line in 13th (20:21.3), followed by Madeleine Ryan (16th – 20:27.1), Nathania Tan (21st – 20:40.2), Emmy Longmore (22nd – 20:41.0), Marin Bogulski (30th – 21:16.9), Clodagh McGroary (38th – 21:46.9), and Helen Moloney (44th – 22:14.9).
 
In the men's team competition, Manhattan earned its first team championship since 2016, edging Fordham by three points, 33 to 36.  Seton Hall was third at 88 points, followed by Columbia (95), NJIT (112), NYU (136), and Saint Peter's (207).
 
Individually, Fordham's Brandon Hall became the seventh straight Ram to take the top spot, clocking in at 26:07.6 over the 8K course.  Steven Zucca made it a 1-2 finish for Fordham, as he was second in 26:36.4.
 
Rodolfo Sanchez was the next Ram across the line in sixth (27:13.0), followed by Ryan Fahey in 12th (27:54.9), Samuel Wilcox in 15th (28:01.2), Justin Lombardi in 28th (29:06.3), Daniel Asher in 36th (29:45.2), John Arvantides in 38th (29:50.1), and Jack O'Connell in 45th (30:53.8).
 
Fordham will next be in action on October 16th at the Princeton Invitational.
