Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Fordham men's tennis team ventured up to Poughkeepsie on Friday and Saturday to compete at the Marist Invitational in its final action of the fall. Top finishers for the Rams were
Toi Kobayashi and
Tom Russwurm, who tied for the B Flight title, and
Robert Hagan and
Rhett Bailey, who tied for the C Flight championship.
In B Flight competition, Russwurm started with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Merrimack's Conrad Koch and advanced to the finals with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Jack Sequerth of Marist.
On the other side of the B Flight, Kobayashi defeated Merrimack's Alec Mackay, 6-3, 6-4, and then beat Fordham teammate
Nicholas Kanazirev, who opened play with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Lafayette's Oliver Fiallo, 6-3, 6-4, to move on the finals.
In C Flight action, Hagan opened play with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Lafayette's David Esslinger, and then moved to the finals when the opponent in the next round retired due to injury.
On the other side of the B Flight, Bailey was victorious over Lafayette's Ross Coleman, 6-1, 6-1, and then defeated Marist's Carlos Vasquez, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7, to advance to the championship.
In the A Flight,
Jofre Segarra took a 6-3, 6-3, decision from Lafayette's Arman Ganchi and then advanced to the championship with a walkover win where he faced Aryaan Bhatia from Merrimack, falling to him 6-3, 6-1.
Fordham's
Juan Paredes also competed in the A Flight, defeating Marist's Gabe Castillo-Sanchez, 6-0, 6-1, before falling to the eventual Flight A champion, Bhatia.
In Flight A doubles, the teams of Paredes / Kanazirev and Bailey / Kobayashi each won their first round match while in the B Flight Russwurm and Segarra won the consolation bracket.
