Kirstin Gellatly Scores Twice Including Game-Winner in Overtime to Knock Off Columbia in ECAC Semifinals

On This Date Presented by Belmont Realty

With the 2020 fall sports season canceled by the COVID-19 outbreak, we at Fordham have decided to dig back through our archives and provide our fans with content on some of the outstanding teams and student-athletes who have graced Rose Hill over the years.

November 17, 2001 – New York, N.Y. – Qualifying for the postseason for just the second time, the Fordham women's soccer team entered the 2001 ECAC Championship as the #2 seed and faced off with #3 seed Columbia on the Lions' home turf of Commisso Soccer Stadium.GellatlyGoalCelebration

The home field advantage did not help Columbia, as Fordham's Kirstin Gellatly scored in the 105th minute to give the Rams a 2-1 overtime win over the Lions to advance to the ECAC Championship final.

The Rams got the scoring started in the 22nd minute as Jacqui Aines crossed the ball into the box, which Colleen Sullivan flicked on with her head.  Gellatly quickly one-timed the head pass into the top corner of the net.

Columbia quickly tied the game at one in the 27th minute, when Eva Gudbjornsdottir netted the tying goal after a scrum in front of the net.

The score remained tied through the rest of regulation, forcing the game into overtime, where in the 105th minute, the Rams took home the victory.  Corey Dunfey played a ball to Aines, who found Gellatly for a breakaway.  Gellatly dribbled around the Columbia goalkeeper and tucked home the game-winner.

In net, Shannon Misiaszek made four saves for the Rams, while Erissa Aronson (45 minutes – two saves) and Janine Ierardi (60 minutes – two saves) split time for Columbia in goal.

For Gellatly, the two goals broke the Fordham single season mark for goals with 14 and points with 31.  The previous marks were 13 goals and 29 points by Denise Corrado in 1995.  The win was also the 10th of the year for Fordham, which also set a new team mark for wins in season.
