With the 2020 fall sports season canceled by the COVID-19 outbreak, we at Fordham have decided to dig back through our archives and provide our fans with content on some of the outstanding teams and student-athletes who have graced Rose Hill over the years.
Matt Courtenay
October 7, 2011 – (Cincinnati, Ohio) –
Box Score - Behind the strong play of Ryan Meara in goal and a first-half marker from Matt Courtenay, the Fordham men's soccer team opened up Atlantic 10 play with an upset of #23 Xavier with a 1-0 win.
The Rams' last win over a ranked opponent on the road came in 2006, when Fordham defeated #9 South Florida, while overall, the last win over a ranked opponent was in 2008 over then #9 Saint Louis at Jack Coffey Field.
Fordham had two scoring chances in the first 15 minutes as John Niyonsaba blasted a shot that Justin Marshall brought in for the save, while Tim Richardson had a header shot that Marshall also turned away.
The game turned in Fordham's favor in the 36th minute, as Niyonsaba got a through ball to Matt Courtenay, who blasted it into the upper 90 to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Ryan Meara then took over making all four of his saves in the game during the second half. It was Meara's 28th career shutout, breaking the previous mark of 27 set by Jeff Knuth.
Kristyn Daly
October 7, 2000 – (Philadelphia, Pa.) –
Box Score - Less than one year after all-time Fordham volleyball assists leader Lisa Bevill set the single-match record with 77 at home against nearby rival St. John's, Kristyn Daly matched the feat, while also setting a new program road and conference record, with 77 at La Salle on this day 20 years ago.
The Rams came away with a five-set match win over the Explorers by scores of 15-11, 9-15, 15-17, 15-12, and 16-14.
Daly set the table all match long for Fordham hitters, as four Rams finished in double figures for kills with three having at least 19 kills. Beth Crockett had a team-high 21 kills to go with 14 digs with Kelly Hierlmeier adding a career-high 20 kills, 17 digs, and four blocks. Melissa Langness also registered a career-high 19 kills with Roxanne Hill having 10 kills and five blocks.
One of the program's best setters, Daly rates in the top ten of several all-time categories. Daly finished the year averaging 10.1 assists per set, which was then third-highest all-time but has since fallen to seventh. Daly finished her career with 3,203 helpers, which ranked right behind Bevill but sits fourth currently in program history. Her 8.41 career per-set average ranks fifth and she is also ninth all-time with 953 digs.
