Men’s Tennis Opens Season at Quinnipiac Invitational

Fabian Mauritzson win B Singles flight

Hamden, Conn. – The Fordham men's tennis squad opened its 2019-2020 season at the Quinnipiac Invitational from September 20-22 where Fabian Mauritzson was the top performer, winning the B Singles flight.
 
Mauritzson received a bye in the first round and then defeated Fairfield's Jan Parizek, 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, he upended Axel Stern from Quinnipiac, 6-1, 6-1, and then reached the finals with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Marist's Jack Sequerth. In the finals, Mauritzson won the first set against Piotr Sowinski of Marist, 6-1, but dropped the second, 6-2, to force a tiebreaker, which he won 10-8.
 
Steven Duka also competed in the B Singles flight, defeating UConn's Alex Yu, 6-1, 7-6(2), and Fairfield's Jack Sarabia, 6-4, 6-3, to move to the quarterfinals where he fell to Sequerth, 6-1, 6-4.
 
In the A Singles flight, Max Green received a first round bye before defeating Wesleyan's Peter Anker, 6-4, 6-4. But Green was then defeated by Wesleyan's Noah Lilienthal, 6-3, 6-1.
 
Lutwin de Macar also competed in the A Singles flight, dropping his first match to Augusto Gonzalez Bonorino, 6-3, 6-4, but he came back to win four consolation matches. De Macar defeated UConn's Yili Zheng (8-6), Fairfield's Allan Magid (8-0), Fairfield's Stefan Mitrovic (8-2), and Quinnipiac's Axel Stern (8-6).
 
Finn Kemper and Alex Makatsaria also competed in the A Singles flight, with both receiving first round byes. Kemper fell to Quinnipiac's Patrick Cachapero in the next round, 6-4, 6-2, while Makatsaria was knocked off by Wesleyan's Zach Lieb, 6-3, 6-3.
 
In consolation action, Makatsaria defeated Fairfield's William Townsend Font (8-3) and Fairfield's Mitrovic (8-2) but fell to Fairfield's Jonathan Olive Blanco (8-3). Kemper fell to Quinnipiac's Alester Magalit (8-4) and Nestor Giribet Lopez from Marist (8-7).
 
Also competing in the B Singles flight was Jofre Segarra and Gabriel Mashaal. Both received first round byes before Segarra retired in his match with Fairfield's Griffin Schlesinger and Mashaal fell to Marist's Sowinski, 6-1, 6-1. Mashaal played in one consolation match, losing to Fairfield's Lewis Edwards (8-1).
 
In doubles action, Kemper and Green fell to Fairfield's Tyler Schibles and Griffin Schlesinger, 6-3, and de Macar and Mauritzson fell to Marist's John Oxner and Giribert Lopez, 6-4, at A Doubles.
 
In B Doubles, Mashaal and Duka fell to Quinnipiac's Magalit and Bryan Schick, 6-2, while Makatsaria and Segarra fell to Marist's Kian Yazdi and Alex Watelet, 6-4.
 
The Rams return to action on Saturday and Sunday, October 4 and 5, as they host the Fordham Four-in-the-Fall on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts. Competing with Fordham will be FDU, Marist, and St. Francis (NY).
