ABCA All-Region Team Release
Morgantown, W. Va. – (June 12, 2019) – Prior to the start of the College World Series this weekend, 72 baseball student-athletes comprise the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association's 22nd Annual All-America first, second and third All-America teams, as announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Nineteen different conferences are represented, including eight conference championships teams. The three All-America squads are also made up of seven conference players of the year, seven conference pitchers of the year winners, two defensive players of the year, one relief pitcher of the year, one newcomer of the year and 12 first-round draft picks in the recent Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
Among the honorees, Fordham sophomore
John Stankiewicz was named Third Team All-American. It is his second All-American honor, as he was named Third Team All-American by
Collegiate Baseball on May 30
th. Stankiewicz is Fordham's first baseball All-American since Mike Marchiano in 1997.
In addition to the All-American nod, he will also have a chance at a third All-American award, as today he was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Northeast Region First Team. The honor advances Stankiewicz to the ballot for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors. The ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-Americans will be announced on Saturday, June 15.
The Cherry Hill, N.J. native was the 2019 Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year and a First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection, helping the Rams to their first conference title and first NCAA appearance since 1998. Stankiewicz recorded a team-high eight wins to go with a 1.47 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 92.0 innings. He has walked only 20 batters this season and held opponents to a .190 batting average.
He was the fourth Ram ever to record 100 strikeouts in a season, and ranked third on the Fordham single season list behind only Dick Egan (107 – 1909) and Hank Borowy (115 – 1939), while his 1.47 ERA tied for the fifth-lowest in program history with former MLB All-Star Johnny Murphy (1929).
A three-time Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week this season, he ranked in the top 20 in the NCAA in ERA (6
th) and WHIP (10
th).
