Bronx, N.Y. – (December 7, 2019) – In its final set of matches before Christmas break, the Fordham squash team ended the semester on a high note, sweeping their three home matches on Saturday with victories over Denison, Boston College, and Swarthmore.
The day began with a tight 5-4 win over Denison. With only eight players available, the Rams rallied to win five of the eight matches to take the win.
Fordham did well in the bottom half of the draw, winning the fifth through eighth slot matches all in three games.
Justin George (#5) took down D. Graham Poole (12-10, 11-3, 11-7), followed by a win by
Dylan Panichello (#6) posted a win over Reece Quigley (11-4, 11-5, 11-4).
Jacob Bennett (#7) earned his win over Maximilian Mehm (11-5, 11-3, 11-3) with
Caleb Schumacher (#8) recording his victory over Mark Taylor (11-3, 11-5, 11-7)
The match was then decided with a five-game thriller between Fordham's
Griffin Fitzgerald and Henry Rosenberg at second position. Fitzgerald took the first two games, 12-10 and 13-11, but Rosenberg rallied with 11-8 and 11-6 scores in the third and fourth games. The fifth game though went back to Fitzgerald at 11-8, giving the team victory to Fordham.
In match two, the Rams were back to full strength posting an 8-1 win over Boston College.
George, Panichello, Bennett, Schumacher each posted wins from the sixth through ninth position to put Fordham a prime spot for its second win of the day. Fitzgerald recorded his second win at the #2 position for the fifth point, while
Tommy White (#3),
Winthrop Reed IV (#4), and
Justin Deckoff (#5) completed the 8-1 win by the Rams.
Deckoff and Panichello had the toughest matches, each winning in five games. Deckoff rallied from two games down to defeat William Langdon, 7-11, 12-14, 11-9, 11-3, and 11-7, while Panichello also posted a come-from-behind win over John Broadhurst, 7-11, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10, and 11-7.
Fordham then ended the day with a clean 9-0 sweep of Swarthmore, improving to 14-5 on the year.
Patrick Rodden led the way, as he picked up a first slot win over Ford Johnstone, 11-6, 11-5, and 11-4.
The Rams are now off until January 14
th when Fordham hosts Connecticut College.
