San Diego, Calif. – (August 7, 2018) – With an impressive list of accomplishments this season, playing for the El Paso Chihuahuas, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres in the Pacific Coast League, former Fordham Ram pitcher Brett Kennedy got the call every baseball player hopes to get. He's going to "the show."
Kennedy, who just turned 24 on August 4
th, will make his Major League debut this Wednesday for the San Diego Padres, when the team visits the Milwaukee Brewers, it was announced by San Diego manager Andy Green over the weekend. Game time is set for 8:00 PM ET.
"I am really excited for Brett! This is a day that he has worked towards his entire life, and a day he will always remember," said Fordham baseball coach
Kevin Leighton. "He has earned this opportunity and knowing Brett, he will make the most of it and continue to strive to be the best pitcher he can be. He is an exceptional representative of our program and Fordham University. I can't wait to see him in a major league uniform!"
After being a non-roster invitee to Padres spring training this season, Kennedy has been outstanding for El Paso, pitching in the Triple-A All-Game for the PCL All-Stars. He has started 16 games this season, posting a 10-0 record with a 2.72 ERA and 80 strikeouts over 89.1 innings. He is holding opponents to a .233 batting average to go with a 1.12 WHIP.
Kennedy was an 11
th round selection by San Diego in the 2015 MLB Draft, following his junior season at Fordham University. As a junior, he helped Fordham to a second straight appearance at the Atlantic 10 Championship. He finished the year as the Rams' top arm, leading the team in starts (15), wins (6), innings pitched (87.0), and strikeouts (97), while finishing with a 4.14 ERA and just 20 walks. He was better in Atlantic 10 play, registering a 5-3 record with a 3.51 ERA in 51.1 innings. He also finished league action with 55 strikeouts to just eight walks.
He also moved into second place on Fordham's career strikeouts list that season, where he has since been tied by fellow San Diego draft pick
Reiss Knehr at 218 through three seasons. His 97 strikeouts in 2015 also tied for the fourth-highest single season mark ever at Fordham, and was a big part of the Fordham pitching staff setting a new team record for strikeouts.
