Bronx, N.Y. – (June 14, 2018) - The 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Men's and Women's At-Large teams, selected by
CoSIDA, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The 15-member Women's Academic All-America® First Team featured Fordham swimming & diving's
Nele Albers (Ludinghausen, Germany).
Albers becomes the 33
rd Fordham student-athlete and first swimmer to earn Academic All-America honors, and the first At-Large selection since Nicole Arrato in 2015. It is also the fifth consecutive academic year that Fordham has had at least one Academic All-American.
On the women's side, 41 of the 45 members of the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Women's At-Large Team achieved at least a 3.90 GPA, with 35 student-athletes compiling a 4.00 GPA (or better) during their undergraduate and/or graduate careers. The 15 members of the first team recorded a 3.99 average GPA.
She is joined on the First Team by Stanford's Katie Ledecky (swimming), Alabama's Mackenzie Brannan (gymnastics), Nebraska's Danielle Breen (gymnastics), Tulsa's Stephanie Call (rowing), Kent State's Ines Delpech (field hockey), Iona's Gabriella Di Domizio (lacrosse), Drake's Madison Glennie (golf), West Virginia's Elizabeth Gratz (rifle), New Mexico's Katharine Irwin (skiing), Florida's Josie Kuhlman (tennis), N.C. State's Hannah Moore (swimming), George Mason's Nicole Van Oort (rowing), and Missouri State's Sydney Zupan (swimming)
Albers just graduated from Fordham with 4.00 GPA and a degree in computer science with a minor in Mathematics. After transferring from Marshall University, she has spent the last two seasons with the Fordham swimming & diving team, competing in the breaststroke and individual medley events, and setting the school record in the 200 breaststroke event.
A two-year member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, Albers was named to the 2018 Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team after scoring in two events at the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship. She finished seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.92), while grabbing 12th in the 400 IM (4:27.51). She also helped the 400 medley relay team score at the championship, taking fifth overall (3:45.01).
The at-large teams for the Google Cloud Academic All-America® program include the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming & diving, tennis and water polo for both men and women, as well as beach volleyball, bowling, field hockey and rowing for women, and volleyball and wrestling for men.
