Bronx, N.Y. – As the Fordham University football Rams prepare for their final scrimmage of the 2016 fall camp we continue our position-by-position breakdown of the squad with a look at the defensive backs.
Â
While the defensive backfield returns only two of the four starters from 2015, the unit brings back a wealth of experience.
Â
Jihaad Pretlow
Leading the Fordham defensive backfield in 2016 will be returning starters, senior
Jihaad Pretlow and junior
Caleb Ham. Pretlow, a preseason All-Patriot League pick, was named First Team All-Patriot League at defensive back last fall after starting all 12 games at cornerback. He recorded 65 total tackles, 46 solo, fourth best on the team, and had three tackles for loss. Pretlow led the team with 12 pass breakups and also intercepted two passes. He ranked third in the Patriot League and 37th in the NCAA FCS in passes defended.
Â
Ham, who started ten games at free safety as a sophomore, made 45 total tackles last fall, 36 solo, including one for loss. He tied for the team lead with three interceptions and tied for third on the squad with five pass breakups.
Â
Other returning players with experience include senior
Marcus Fulmore, junior
Marcus Hicks and sophomores
Dylan Mabin and
Lawrence Menyah. Last fall, Fulmore saw action in five games as a junior, making two starts, before his season was ended by injury. He recorded 21 total tackles, 17 solo, including one for loss, and also had three pass breakups and one interception while Hicks appeared in four games as a sophomore, making three tackles, all in the Georgetown win. Mabin, who played in eleven games as a freshman, recorded 15 total tackles, 13 solo, and he was second on team with seven pass breakups while Menyah saw action in ten games for the Rams as a freshman, recording 12 total tackles, four solo.
Â
Also back in the defensive backfield are sophomores
James Biggs-Frazier,
Bryce Petty,
Tyler Long and
Antonio Jackson along with senior
Roddy Roche and juniors
Liam Cadman and
Conor Cassidy.
Â
Last season Biggs-Frazier saw action in ten games, both in the defensive backfield and on special teams, making nine total tackles, five solo, while Petty appeared in three games as a freshman, both in the defensive backfield and on special teams. Long played in six games as a freshman, making four stops, two solo, while Jackson appeared in eleven games as a freshman, making 15 tackles, eleven solo, and he had one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry.
Â
Newcomers to the defensive backfield in 2016 include freshmen
Jeff Ginn, Jr.,
Jesse Bramble and
Jordan Burg. Ginn comes to Fordham from Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio, where was a 2015 First Team All-Senate League pick while Bramble is a product of Tottenville High School on Staten Island where he earned First Team All-City honors last fall. Burg starred at the Winward School in Los Angeles the past four years.
