Bronx, N.Y. – With the first scrimmage of camp behind us, we continue our position-by-position breakdown of the 2016 Fordham with a look at the wide receivers/tight ends.
Â
After graduating the top five pass catchers from 2015, the 2016 Rams weren't sure who was going to step in at wide receiver/tight end. To the Rams' delight, a bevy of players stepped up, led by senior tight end
Phazahn Odom and a group of talented freshmen receivers who combined to catch 106 passes for 1,514 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Â
Phazahn Odom
Odom, who entered the 2015 season with five career catches, hauled in 37 passes for 492 yards and seven touchdowns, setting a school record for most touchdown receptions by a tight end. Odom finished fourth in the Patriot League in receiving touchdowns, tenth in the League in yards/reception (13.30) and 13th in receptions/game (3.1).
Â
The top four freshmen receivers from last year are all back, led by sophomores
Corey Caddle and
Austin Longi. In 2016, Caddle caught 36 passes for 466 yards and five touchdowns, tops among all freshman receivers, ranking second on team in receptions, third in receiving yards and tied for third in touchdowns. Longi hauled in 34 passes for 463 yards, both third best on the team, with six touchdowns, second best on the squad. He ranked eighth in the Patriot League in yards/reception (13.62).
Â
The other two freshmen who stepped in last year were sophomores
Jonathan Lumley and
Jordan Allen. Last season Lumley grabbed 19 passes for 263 yards with three touchdowns, tied for third best on the squad while Allen caught 17 passes for 322 yards and one score.
Â
Also back is senior
Robbie Cantelli, who started the first eight games for the Rams as a junior before suffering a season-ending injury. He recorded 32 catches for 472 receiving yards (both team highs when he was injured) with one touchdown in 2015.
Â
Other returning receivers with experience include senior
Jorge Solano and sophomore tight end
Isaiah Searight. Solano, who missed the past two years with an injury, hopes to return to the form of his freshman season when he caught ten passes for 116 yards and one score. He also returned 43 kickoffs for 909 yards (21.1 yards/return) and one touchdown, both single-season school records.
Â
Searight saw action in eleven games last year, catching one pass for seven yards.
Â
Another returner who missed last year with an injury is sophomore
Noah Nix, a two-way starter on the state semifinalists team at The Westminster School in Atlanta where he averaged 16.5 yards per touch in 2014.
Â
Also back at wide out are senior
Luke Arlotto and sophomores
Andrew Prince and
Dan Halligan while junior tight end
James Orfini is also returns.
Â
The lone newcomer to the wide receiver corps is freshman
Jonah Isaac.
