Yonkers, N.Y. – After spending the early morning working out with their teammates, nine members of the Fordham University football squad traveled to Yonkers to help
Habitat for Humanity of Westchester work on a house that has special meaning to Fordham. The project is sponsored by
Fordham Campus Ministry and coordinated with the
Arrupe Faith and Justice group.
Â
The nine Rams arrived at the
Pope Francis House, a house on High Street that was purchased by an anonymous donor and named for the current Pope. Once finished, the house will be occupied by U.S. Army Sgt. Michael Velazquez, 24, and his family.
Â
The Rams started the day by helping to clean up debris behind the house which consisted of the old brick façade of the house along with carpeting and wood that was taken from the structure.
Â
Six of the Rams then grabbed hammers and went into the house to help bring down a wall and some rafters while three others went to another Habitat for Humanity of Westchester house next door that had experienced flooding issues. Those players helped to take out damaged drywall and then reinsulate and install new drywall.
Â
At the end of a long day, the nine Rams returned to campus tired, but grounded in the Jesuit tradition of being men for others.
