Fordham University Teams Honored by NCAA for High Academic Achievement

Fordham one of 46 NCAA Division I programs to have teams recognized eleven straight years

APR Public Recognition Awards

Bronx, N.Y. - Six Fordham University athletic teams were among more than 1,000 Division I squads to be publicly recognized by the NCAA for their latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, posting multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. Additionally, Fordham was recognized as just one of 46 NCAA Division I programs, and one of three Atlantic 10 schools, that have one or more teams recognized in each of the eleven years they have been awarded.

Davidson led all A-10 institutions with 10 A-10 teams earning public recognition, followed by Saint Joseph's with eight. St. Bonaventure and Fordham had six teams recognized and George Washington and La Salle had five teams honored.

The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport.

The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from 2011-2012, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 983 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport.

Being honored for the Rams are Baseball, Golf, Men's Tennis, Men's Track and Field, Women's Tennis and Water Polo. Women's Tennis has both been honored in each of the eleven years the NCAA has released the scores while baseball is recognized for the ninth time, the Men's Track and Field program is recognized for the seventh time as is the and the golf and water polo squads are recognized for the third time.

"To be included as one of 46 NCAA Division I programs that have had a team honored in each of the eleven years places Fordham in rare company," said Director of Athletics, David Roach. "These awards demonstrate that Fordham student-athletes are champions, both on and off the field. We are proud of the Fordham teams that have been recognized by the NCAA for their academic accomplishments and congratulate them for their accomplishment. Those student-athletes are great representatives of Fordham Athletics and Fordham University."

APRs for all Division I teams will be released April 20. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.

The 1,071 teams publicly recognized for high achievement include 649 women's teams and 422 men's or mixed squads. This year, schools combined the indoor and outdoor track and field teams into one team score, which slightly reduced the overall number of teams earning Public Recognition Awards.

The scores required to be in the top ten ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. This year, a record 953 teams earned public recognition with a perfect APR score.
