Kingston, R.I. – The Fordham Indoor Track & Field teams completed the 2016 A-10 Indoor Championships on Sunday in Kingston, hosted by the University of Rhode Island. Among highlights, freshman Sean Phillips' victory in the 1,000 meter finals stands out. For his performances over the two-day meet, Phillips was named the Men's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer, the first time a Fordham athlete was given the distinction.

The Rams had six qualifiers on Sunday running in finals plus performances in the 3,000 meter, the 4x400 meter relay and the 4x800 meter relay.

Jared Benn kicked things off for the Rams in the 500 meter, placing sixth overall in 1:05.89. Merissa Wright competed for the women and finished eighth in 1:15.79. In the 800 meter, Shanna Heaney also crossed eighth in 2:24.45.

Phillips finished runner-up in the 1,000 meter qualifiers yesterday and was victorious today in 2:30.77. This weekend was just the second and third times that the freshman has competed in the event this season.

In the 3,000 meter, Thomas Slattery scored a top-10 finish, finishing 10th overall, with a 8:40.49 finish. Nik O'Brien followed in 14th with a 8:44.98 time. On the women's side, Stephanie Leo placed 15th in 10:30.59, while Josephine Jacob-Dolan finished 26th in 10:48.47.

Fordham men's 4x800 meter relay team of Fritz Heinrich, Phillips, Brian Cook, and Louis Santelli finished runners-up with a time of 7:40.55. The 2012 Rams set the A-10 record in 7:38.31. The 4x400 meter relay squad of Michael Aman, Benn, Jordan Allen, and Eddie Dehais, all freshmen, finished ninth in 3:28.82.

The women's 4x800 meter relay team also experienced success by winning the event in 9:05.45, six seconds ahead of Saint Louis. The underclassman quartet of Morgan Menzzasalma, Christina Perrier, Aidan Moroz, and Leah Hickey finished the 4x400 meter relay in 4:00.64, good for eighth overall.

Following the day's results, the team scoring was as follows: the Fordham men's squad ranked ninth out of 10 qualifying schools, while the women's team placed 12th out of 13.

The Rams will take part in the Last Chance Invitational next Saturday, February 27, at the Ocean Breeze Park Track & Field Complex on Staten Island. The following weekend, Fordham will participate at the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Boston.
