ORLANDO -- The Fordham softball team earned its way into the win column for the first time in 2016 when it rallied to defeat Rutgers, 3-2, before falling to #17 UCF, 4-0, Saturday to conclude the UCF Knights Invitational. With the split, the Rams see their record move to 1-3 overall.
Against their Garden State foe, Fordham drew first blood in the bottom of the second when junior
Stephanie Ferri delivered a two-out RBI single to plate fellow classmate
Lindsay Mayer, who doubled to lead off the frame.
However, the advantage was short-lived, as the Scarlet Knights scored twice in the top of the third to go in front by a score of 2-1.
Ferri came through for the Rams in the bottom of the fourth with her second RBI single of the game, which plated freshman
Maria Trivelpiece. Later on with two outs, junior
Sydney Canessa delivered the eventual game-winning with a RBI single to score sophomore Morgan Figueora.
Graduate student
Rachel Gillen (1-1) earned the victory in the circle after tossing her second complete game of the season. The southpaw allowed two earned runs on four hits, walked three and struck out three.
Whitney Jones was charged with the loss for Rutgers, as the Rams touched her for three earned runs on seven hits over 4.0 innings of work.
Junior
Lauren Quense (0-2) pitched a very solid game for Fordham in game two against the Knights. She went the distance was charged with an unfortunate four earned runs on a questionable call at shortstop, scattered nine hits, walked four and struck out three, as four all four runs were scored in the bottom of the fourth.
Gillen collected two of the Rams' five hits.
Fordham returns to action Sunday at 12 p.m. when it travels to DeLand, Fla. to take on Stetson.
