Bronx, N.Y. – Though there was a threat of rain, the annual tradition of the Fordham baseball alumni game against the current Rams went on as scheduled this past Saturday. A total of 33 former players took part in the pre-game ceremony with a number of them taking part in the game itself.
Though the alumni had a strong turnout, it was not enough against the current Rams, as the alumni team fell by a 7-2 score in an abbreviated game.
After the current Rams took a 1-0 lead in the first, the alumni bounced back with two runs in the second. Mike Mauri ('13) started the rally with a one-out single to right center, followed by a walk to Shannon Summers ('01). Bobby DiNardo ('09) roped a single to left center with Mauri trying to score on the play. However, he was called out at home on a swipe tag by
Justin Bardwell. Still with runners at second and third and two outs, the alumni cashed in both runs on a two-run double by Chris Kaible ('09).
Today's Rams though did not let that lead last long, scoring twice in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead at 3-2, capitalizing on a two-run double by Alvin Melendez.
Fordham added four more runs by game's end for the 7-2 final in the exhibition contest.
The alumni managed five hits in the game by Mauri (single), DiNardo (single), Kaible (two-run double),
Ryan McNally ('15) (single, two stolen bases), and Alex Kenny ('11) (single). On the mound, it was Ryan Crist ('01), Charlie Cucchiara ('95), soon-to-be Fordham Athletics Hall of Famer Javier Martinez ('07), and McNally, each pitched an inning for the alumni.
