The Fordham Men's Water Polo team will host four schools this weekend at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center, including the home opener against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a program that has received votes in the latest national poll.
The Rams will face the Engineers on Saturday, September 26, at 2 p.m., followed by an evening clash against Connecticut College, also receiving votes in the national poll, at 7 p.m. The following day, Fordham will host two nationally ranked programs, #18 Harvard and #12 Brown, at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively. Both of the Sunday contests will be streamed live.
The Rams have started the season with two consecutive tournaments at Navy and Bucknell where they have split both weekends and sit with a 4-4 record. Through eight games, head coach
Bill Harris has been able to play all but one in at least three contests and 16 have featured in at least seven. Fordham has outscored its opponents 82-75.
Sophomore
Alex Jahns has spent the majority of time in net with 24.5 quarters played and an 8.82 goals against average. Jahns has also saved exactly half of all attempts faced while assisting on six goals.
Offensively, the team is paced by last year's point-leader, junior
R.J. Simmons, and newcomer
Diego Delgado, each with 11 goals apiece. Simmons also leads the team with 10 assists on the young season.
Last week, freshman
Diego Delgado was named the CWPA Northern Division Rookie of the Week for his offensive and defensive prowess. The Santa Madre, Calif. native pitched in two goals and two assists in a tight loss to #15 Navy and provided four goals and one assist on Sunday against Mercyhurst and George Washington. Delgado's 44% shot percentage is a team-high for all players with at least eight shots on net.
Senior co-captain
Bobby Wurtz has been prolific on both ends of the pool with eight goals, nine assists, and a team-leading 13 steals.
The Rams are off to California next weekend with two contests on Thursday, October 1, against La Verne and Mount San Antonio, before heading to Pomona and Pitzer Colleges for the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament over the weekend.
