Diego Delgado has been named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division's Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Thursday. Junior
R.J. Simmons also made the honor roll for the division's Player of the Week award.
Â
Delgado continued his scorching start to the 2015 season this past weekend at the Bison Invitational with six goals and three assists, plus four steals and two blocks, all while committing just two turnovers.
Â
The freshman played a large role in nearly overcoming #15 Navy in the first contest of the weekend with two goals and two assists. Delgado helped the team rebound from the two Saturday losses with four goals and an assist against Mercyhurst and George Washington, including his second hat trick of the season.
Â
Delgado leads the team in scoring percentage for players with at least 10 attempts on goal with 44% of his shots finding the net. His 11 goals through the season's opening eight goals has him tied with Simmons, last year's leading scorer.
Â
The freshman has been getting it done on defense, too – his 12 combined steals and blocks are second-most in the squad behind senior co-captain
Bobby Wurtz.
Â
Simmons garnered the honorable mention this week after producing six goals of his own this past weekend, including matching a career-high five against George Washington.
Â
The Rams are back in action on Saturday, September 26, with home contests against M.I.T. and Connecticut College.
