The Fordham Water Polo team (16-12, 5-7 CWPA) wrapped up its regular season on the road with four Northern Division road contests in the Northeast over the weekend. The Rams split the four contests with wins over Connecticut College (1-15, 0-6 CWPA) and M.I.T. (11-11, 5-7 CWPA) and losses against #12 Harvard (17-8, 9-3 CWPA) and #12 Brown (21-6, 12-0 CWPA).
Â
Fordham kicked off the weekend with a close 10-8 victory in New London against Connecticut College. Again the Rams led with a balanced scoring attack with seven different scorers.
Â
The Rams headed up to Cambridge, Mass. the following day for a doubleheader. In the morning, Fordham never trailed during a 12-6 victory over M.I.T. to make it two wins in a row and six of the last seven. Freshman
Magnus Sims scored a career-high three goals in the rout, following by two from seniors
Andrew Gonzalez and
Patrick Reyes and junior
R.J. Simmons.
Davis DeFontes,
Peter Bergum, and
Grant Keesling all added one apiece.
Â
Sophomore
Alex Jahns started in net and made 11 saves over three-and-a-half quarters, providing one assist. With the two wins, Fordham has swept the season series against both the Engineers and Camels.
Â
Later in the day, that scoreline was reversed as the Rams fell to #12 Harvard, 12-6, across the city. Gonzalez netted twice again to pace the team and
Ethan Hallowell,
Ryan Guso,
Cameron Shewchuck, and Reyes all scored, as well.
Â
The regular season concluded with a 11-6 loss at Brown in Providence. The Rams kept things close for three periods, including holding a 5-4 lead at halftime, but were unable to muster a fourth period goal after trailing by just two heading into the final frame and the Bears finished their season by going undefeated against Northern Division foes.
Â
Four different seniors netted in their final regular season contest:
Bobby Wurtz and Gonzalez with two each, plus
Patrick Lenihan and Hallowell.
Â
Jahns made another 11 saves on net in 3.5 quarters and finishes out a fantastic season with the fifth-most saves (240) in the last 15 years.
Â
The CWPA has announced Fordham as the #4 seed in this weekend's CWPA Regionals. The Rams will face M.I.T. in game one on Saturday, November 7, at 9:30 a.m, with the winner set to face top-seeded Brown later in the day. Only the top three schools receive automatic bids with four at-large selections being chosen between the Northern and Southern divisions to go to the CWPA Championship in Cambridge, Mass. two weekends later.
