Complete ResultsThe Fordham swimming & diving teams opened their 2015-16 season on Thursday night with a successful performance at Marist in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Fordham women topped Marist, 163-80, while the men snuck out 135-109 victory. The meet also saw two school records fall as well.
Transfer diver
Wendy Espina-Esquivel had an amazing debut for the Rams. She won the one-meter competition with a school record score of 280.20, bettering the old mark of 277.80, set by Elizabeth Dorger in 2011. Then, she broke the three-meter diving school record with a first place score of 307.20, besting Andrea Krok's 2012 record of 304.50.
On the swimming side, the meet began with two wins in the 400 medley relay event, as the women's team of
Morgan Fairclough,
Gabrielle Celia,
Megan Polaha, and
Chandler Lulley posted a winning time of 3:53.36, while
J.T. Klimko,
Chris Viera,
Rhett Karopoulos, and
Liam Semple won the men's event in 3:32.43.
In the 1000 freestyle event, Fordham's
Erin McBride was just touched out by Marist's Shannon Gordon, as she took second in 10:41.43, while
Steve Sholdra kicked off his senior campaign by winning the event in 9:36.18.
Fordham earned a pair of second place finishes in the 200 freestyle event, as
Kalena Laurent clocked in at 1:56.62, while
Liam Semple registered a time of 1:46.74.
The Rams got back on the winning track in the women's 50 freestyle, as
Shannon Lulley won the event in 24.15 seconds, while
Thomas Shetler took second in the men's event in 21.79 seconds.
The Fordham women added another event win in the 200 individual medley, where Polaha took first in 2:08.77, while the men's team got their third event win of the night, as
Isiah Magsino placed first in 1:58.09.
Polaha made it two event wins in a row, as she took first in the 200 butterfly in 2:04.94. In the men's event of the 200 butterfly, Viera grabbed first place in 1:55.86.
The wins continued on the women's side, as
Shannon Lulley won the 100 freestyle in 53.47 seconds with Fairclough taking first in the 200 backstroke in 2:05.73.
Miguel Mattox kept things rolling in the men's competition, taking the top spot in the 200 backstroke in 1:55.67.
Megan Polaha After earning a second place finish earlier in the meet, Laurent earned a first place finish in the 500 freestyle in 5:11.90 with Sholdra winning his second event, taking the men's race in 4:40.81.
The final individual swimming event saw two more wins for the Rams with
Marie Feneron winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:26.01 and Sholdra taking his third event of the night in 2:08.14.
The last overall event was the 400 freestyle relay, which the Rams earned their final victories of the night. The women's team of Laurent, McBride,
Megan Gray, and S. Lulley won their race in 3:36.80, while the men's group of
Scott Brown, Shetler, Magsino, and
Thomas Gillespie was first in 3:15.29.
The Fordham swimming & diving teams will have a quick turnaround for their next meet, as the Rams host Fairfield and Monmouth at the Messmore Aquatic Center, beginning at 5:00 PM.
