Bobby Wurtz Named CWPA Northern Division Player of the Week

Senior Co-Captain Led Rams to 4-2 Weekend Record

Fordham Water Polo senior co-captain Bobby Wurtz was announced as the Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Player of the Week on Wednesday afternoon after helping the Rams to a 4-2 mark during their six-games-in-three-days California stretch, including the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament.

Fordham began its west coast excursion last Thursday with two nonconference matches at La Verne and Mt. San Antonio. The Rams never trailed in the first contest of the weekend against the former and Wurtz scored his lone tally in a 3-1 third period while also providing an assist and notching one steal. Against Mt. San Antonio, Wurtz focused on setting up his teammates, setting up two goals, and tallying another steal.

Fordham faced #16 Whittier College in match one of the tournament and led through three periods in part due to Wurtz's four points on two goals and two assists. Unfortunately, the Rams fell in the final period and lost the match, 11-9. Later in the day and looking to rebound, Wurtz paced the team with three goals on three shots, all coming from open play, but again Fordham was denied a win, losing, 8-7, to Redlands.

Day Two saw rest for many Fordham starters and Wurtz himself saw few minutes in a win over Occidental College. Against stiff Cal-Lutheran opposition in the ultimate California contest, Wurtz again paced his team with three goals on five shots, the third time the senior has netted a hat  trick this season, en route to a 8-7 win.

Wurtz and the Rams return home to host Northern Division rival Iona on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. inside the Messmore Aquatics Center.
