Andrew Gonzalez Named CWPA Northern Division Player of the Week

Senior Netted 11 Goals Over Four Games Last Weekend

Senior Andrew Gonzalez was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA)'s Northern Division Player of the Week on Thursday after his terrific weekend against four opponents across two days at the Colonel Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center.

Gonzalez was a major part of an 11-5 victory against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the team's home opener last Saturday, with three goals on four shots and two assists. In a blow-out win over Connecticut College later in the day, Gonzalez played sporadically and chipped in another goal. On Sunday, against two ranked opponents, #18 Harvard and #12 Brown, the senior shone brightly.

On a day when the Crimson defense was near impossible to break down, Gonzalez was able to find the net twice on extra-man plays, and followed that solid performance with his best of the season – a career-high five goals in the first three periods against Brown, on six shots, to kept the contest close at 7-6 heading into the fourth. Unfortunately, the Bears buckled down and shut Fordham out for just the fourth time this season (all three other periods came in one contest, at Bucknell).

Overall, Gonzalez netted 11 goals on just 16 shots. The senior now sits second on the squad with 16 goals and easily has the best shooting percentage (50%) of any player with at least 10 shots on net. Gonzalez's 11 exclusion goals is a team-best and five more than the next player.

The Rams are in California for two contests today against La Verne and Mt. San Antonio before participating in the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
