Chase Edmonds and Ian Williams Honored by College Football Performance Awards

Edmonds named national running back of the week; Williams national defensive back of the week

CFPA Release | Beyond Sports Network Release

Bronx, N.Y. (September 16, 2014) – Fordham freshman running back Chase Edmonds and senior defensive back Ian Williams were both honored by College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) today with Edmonds being named the national running back of the week and Williams the national defensive back of the week. Additionally, Edmonds, who was named Patriot League Offensive and Rookie of the Week, Sports Network Rookie of the Week and ECAC Rookie of the Week on Monday, was also named the number one athlete of the week by the Beyond Sports Network.

Edmonds had a record-breaking game on Saturday, leading Fordham to a 54-7 win over the University of Rhode Island on Jack Coffey Field.  He carried 22 times for 231 yards and four touchdowns, scoring on runs of 87, 41, 16 and ten yards. The 87-yard run tied for the fourth longest run in school history while his 231 rushing yards is the ninth best single game total in school history. Edmonds broke the school freshman rushing record of Darren Wallace, who gained 198 yards against Brown in 1990 (Edmonds had originally been credited with breaking the freshman mark with his season-opening 181 rushing yards in the Saint Francis game as Wallace was mistakenly listed as a sophomore in 1990).

On the year, Edmonds has gained 407 yards on 50 carries, an average of 135.7 yards/game. He has also returned tem kickoffs for 225 yards (22.5 yards/return). Edmonds leads the NCAAFCS in all-purpose yards/game (213.3) and is second in the Patriot League and eleventh in the NCAA FCS in rushing yards/game.

Williams, who was named to the Patriot League weekly honor roll, accounted for eight points for the Rams against Rhode Island as on consecutive plays he recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and then tackled the quarterback for a safety. He finished with seven tackles and an interception.

On the season, Williams has 19 total tackles, 15 solo, with one for loss, two pass breakups, one interception and one fumble recovery. He is third on the squad in total tackles.

The Rams return to action on Saturday as they travel into Manhattan on Saturday, September 20, to face the Columbia Lions at the Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium at Baker Athletics Complex at 12:30 p.m. in the annual Liberty Cup battle.
