Rowing Competes at Dad Vail Championships

Varsity 8 places sixth in Grand Finals, JV 8 takes fifth

Philadelphia, Pa. (May 27, 2014) – The Fordham University rowing squad closed out its 2013-2014 season with an appearance at the 2014 Dad Vail Championships on the Schuylkill River on May 9 and 10 where the varsity 8 placed sixth in the grand finals and the junior varsity 8 was fifth. Fordham and U Mass where the only two A-10 schools to have both their Varsity and JV eights in the grand final of the prestigious regatta.
 
The varsity 8 opened the regatta by placing second in its heat in 6:33.397, just about two seconds behind Bucknell but ahead of Middlebury, Delaware and Chicago to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals, the Rams again placed second in 6:53.790 to advance to the grand finals, just behind Massachusetts but in front of Saint Joseph's, Fairfield, Temple and Marist.
 
In the Evelyn Bergman Trophy race, the grand finals for the varsity 8, the Fordham entry took sixth, behind Massachusetts, Drexel, Grand Valley, Bucknell and Duquesne, with less than a second separating the Dukes from the Rams.
 
The Fordham junior varsity also advanced to the grand finals after placing second in the semifinals, covering the course in 6:37.790, placing in front of Duquesne, Purdue, Delaware and Lehigh but behind Drexel. In the Coleman D. Boylan grand finals, the Rams took fifth in 7:50.295, behind Bucknell, Drexel, Grand Valley and Massachusetts, but ahead of Temple.
 
The Rams also had a freshman/novice 8 and varsity 4 competed at the regatta. The freshman/novice 8 boat placed second in its heat to advance to the semifinals. The Rams were just two seconds behind Drexel in the heat, but in front of Marquette and Rochester. In the semifinals, Fordham placed fourth just behind Saint Joseph's with a time of 7:17.726, the fifth fastest semifinals time in the event.
 
In the varsity 4, Fordham placed fourth in the heat, ahead of Duquesne, in 7:29.480.
