Game One Gabby Luety and
Rachel Gillen recorded two RBIs apiece in the first game of a doubleheader, leading the Rams to a 9-6 victory over St. Bonaventure on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Rams picked up their 30
th win of the year, marking the 12
th straight season that Head Coach
Bridget Orchard has led the Rams to at least that many victories.
Michele Daubman picked up her 14
th win of the season, the second-highest win total for a pitcher in the Atlantic 10 this year.
Amy Van Hoven went 3-4 at the dish in game one, while
Sydney Canessa,
Kayla Lombardo and
Gabby Luety also recorded multi-hit contests. Canessa also added a solo home run.
The Rams held the Bonnies off the board for the first two innings, but a pair of defensive lapses caught up with Fordham in the top of the third and the Bonnies pushed across two unearned runs.
Trailing by a pair, Fordham quickly responded in the bottom half of the frame, as Van Hoven led off with a triple and soon scored on an
Elise Fortier sac fly. With one down, Lombardo and Luety strung together consecutive hits giving the Rams runners at second and third. Daubman then battled and drew a seven-pitch walk, loading the bases for
Paige Ortiz. The Katy, Texas, native drove a pitch deep to left, picking up an RBI on the sac fly and tying the game at two. Next up was
Rachel Gillen, who roped a single to center field, scoring Luety from second and giving the Rams a 3-2 advantage.
After setting down the Bonnies with ease in the top of the fourth, the Rams exploded in the bottom of the inning, plating five runs on five hits to take an 8-2 lead. Canessa led off the frame with a solo shot to left and Lombardo eventually brought another run home with a single to center. Luety, Daubman and Gillen also picked up RBIs in the bottom of the fourth.
St. Bonaventure got one back in the top of the fifth, but Fordham answered back with one in the bottom half of the frame to remain ahead, 9-3. The Bonnies cut the Fordham lead to four, 9-5, with a pair in the top of the sixth and trimmed the lead even thinner with a solo home run in the top of the seventh, but the Rams held on for the 9-6 victory.
Game Two Rachel Gillen threw the 13
th no-hitter in Fordham history, shutting down the Bonnies in a 12-0 rout in game number two.
While Gillen had a career-day in the circle,
Gabby Luety and
Elise Fortier each hit two dingers to lead the Fordham offense in a 12-run, 15-hit effort.
Luety kicked off the scoring in inning number two, taking the first pitch she saw and belting it over the center field fence to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Fortier followed suit in the bottom of the third, poking a three-run shot to right center and increasing the Rams' advantage to four.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Rams appeared to begin a second round of batting practice, putting up eight runs on the Bonnies. The first seven batters of the inning recorded hits, including two more home runs from Fortier and Luety. By the time the inning ended,
Paige Ortiz had added a solo home run.
The rest of the game belonged to Gillen, who struck out seven batters over five innings, which included the final two outs of the game to record her first collegiate no-hitter.
The Rams have two doubleheaders remaining in the regular season, the first at La Salle this Saturday, beginning at noon.
