Day one of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championship is in the books at Rhode Island's Mackal Fieldhouse in Kingston, R.I. After day one, the Dayton women and the Rhode Island men lead the competition.
On the women's side, Dayton leads with 43 points, followed by George Mason (36), Rhode Island (32), Duquesne (26), Massachusetts (26), La Salle (19), Saint Louis (18), VCU (15), Richmond (8), Saint Joseph's (7), and Fordham (4).
Out of the scoring events on the first day, the Rams scored in the 5,000 meter run as
Anisa Arsenault placed fifth overall in a season-best time of 17:09.40.
In the preliminaries run on Saturday, Fordham qualified for finals in the 500 meters, 800 meters, and 1000 meters. In the 500,
Danielle Rowe qualified fourth in 1:16.17, while
Kristen Stuart qualified fifth in 1:16.40. The 800 meter run saw
Titi Fagade as the top qualifier as she posted a time of 2:18.82.
Melissa Higgins was the last qualifier on day one, as she qualified fifth overall in in 3:00.87.
Other competitors for Fordham on day one were
Melanie Notarstefano in the 800 meters (11
th – 2:27.21),
Kerry Sorenson in the 1000 meters (3:08.07),
Brianne Roche in the 5000 meters (14
th – 18:02.57), and
Averie Sheppard in the 60 meter hurdles (17
th - 9.40).
In the men's competition, Rhode Island has the team lead with 51 points, followed by George Mason (40), La Salle (31), Massachusetts (20), Saint Joseph's (18), VCU (16), Fordham (8), and Saint Louis (7).
In the scoring events, Fordham scored in two events. Sam Houston placed fifth in the long jump competition with a mark of 22' 3", while the distance medley relay also placed fifth in 10:24.39. Houston will also look to score in the heptathlon on Sunday, as he is currently second with 2,796 points, just 25 behind the leader Trent Baltzell of Rhode Island.
Fordham also saw three qualifiers out of the preliminaries in the 800 meters, 1000 meters, and the 60 meter hurdles. Lester Taylor was the number two qualifier in the 800 meter run, posting a time of 1:55.26, while Brian Walter qualified seventh in the 1000 meter run in 2:32.31. Ryan Polo almost made it two finalists in the 1000 meters, as he took ninth in 2:33.97.
The Rams' last qualifier was David Fajoyomi, as he placed eighth in the 60 meter hurdles in 9.28 seconds. Fajoyomi competed in two other events on Saturday, as he was 13
th in the long jump (19' 8 ¼") and 15
th in the 60 meter dash (7.73).
Other Rams competing on day one included James Doran (15
th – 2:00.99) and Yehia Fahmy (17
th – 2:06.81) in the 800 meters, Kyle Clonan in the 1000 meters (14
th – 2:38.70), Patrick Burke (13
th – 15:28.77), Joe Hartnett (15
th – 15:49.43), and Tim Kazanjian (16
th – 15:59.20) in the 5000 meters, and Austin Ruiz in the weight throw (9
th – 45' 2 ¼").
The 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship concludes on Sunday.
