The Fordham softball team was back on the diamond for two more contests on Friday at the 2014 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, held in Cathedral City, California.

In game one of the day, Fordham fell to BYU by a 5-2 score.

The Cougars got out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, scoring runs on an RBI-single by Ashley Thompson and a wild pitch.

BYU added to the lead with two runs in the third inning as the Cougars loaded the bases on two singles and a walk.   Carly Duckworth then delivered a two-run single to center, making it 4-0.

After BYU picked up an unearned run in the fourth to make it a 5-0 game, the Rams got on the board in the top of the fifth.  Brianna Turgeon led off with a walk, followed by an infield single by Sydney Canessa.  After a ground out and pop out put the runners at second and third, Gabby Luety drove in both runs with a single down the left field line to make it, 5-2.

The Rams looked to continue the comeback in the seventh as Fordham did get the go-ahead run to the plate.  Turgeon and Canessa connected for back-to-back singles to start the frame.  After a ground out and a strikeout, Stephanie Ferri drew a walk to load the bases with two outs.  However, BYU's pitcher Ashley Thompson struck out Claudia Law to end the game.

For Fordham, Michele Daubman (3-5) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in three innings of work, while Rachel Gillen gave up one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts in the final three innings.  At the plate, Canessa was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Luety was 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI.

In game two, Missouri's Alora Marble held the Rams to two hits over five innings, as the 16th-ranked Tigers topped Fordham, 8-0, in five innings.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the third, Missouri struck first with an Emily Crane RBI-single to score Taylor Gadbois, who reached on an infield single and stole second.

The Tigers added three more runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run home run by Casey Stangel, her first of the season.

Missouri then closed out the game with a four-run fifth inning.

Lauren Quense (1-1) took the loss, as she pitched the first four innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, while Gillen gave up one earned run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.  At the plate, Amy Van Hoven and Paige Ortiz had the lone hits of the game for Fordham.
