The Fordham squash team entered the 2014 CSA Team Championship as the top seed in the Hawthorn Cup Division of the Championship. However, a game Bryant team snuck away with a 5-4 victory over the Rams on Friday, putting Fordham into the consolation bracket of the Hawthorn Cup.
Fordham got things going by winning the bottom three matches at the seventh through ninth slots.
Matthew Crowe posted a three-set win over Abdullah Abdulmohsen in the ninth slot, 11-9, 11-8, and 11-7, while
James Potts earned a four-set win over Josh Rubinstein at the eighth slot, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, and 11-9.
Ross Garlick finished the bottom third with a straight set win over seventh-slotted Akshay Poonia, 11-8, 11-6, and 11-8.
The middle slots went 2-1 in favor of Bryant, but Fordham still held an overall lead of 4-2. Fordham's
Jimmy Shinnick recorded the lone win at the #5 slot over Phil Carr, 11-2, 11-5, 6-11, and 11-9. The Rams almost pulled it out in the #4 slot with Alex La Versa against Dmytro Bashchynskyy. After splitting the first four sets, Bashchynskyy finally got the better of LaVersa in the fifth, winning, 11-8, 6-11, 11-8, 8-11, and 11-7.
Carlos Ortiz was the final Ram in the section at the #6 slot, falling to Umur Serin, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8, and 11-9.
The top of the draw saw some of the best matches, as each went four sets. The Bulldogs were able to manage wins in all three slots to take the overall match with #1 player Harry Waterton topping Fordham's
Kincade Webster (12-10, 11-8, 7-11, 11-9), #2 player Nicholas Brewer ousting
Jeremy Keller (11-7, 11-3
6-11, 11-7), and #3 player Chase Ruben topping
Paul Monaghan (11-8, 11-13, 11-6, 15-13).
The Rams (9-10) now move onto the consolation bracket at 9:00 AM on Saturday against the loser of Vassar/USC match.
