The Fordham water polo team opened competition at the 2014 CWPA Northern Division Championship on Saturday, posting a 10-7 win over Iona in the morning session, while falling to 11
th-ranked Brown, 13-3 in the afternoon.
Â
In the opening match of the day, Fordham avenged two earlier losses to Iona, defeating the Gaels, 10-7.
Â
Fordham opened with a 3-0 lead after the first quarter, and held that same margin at halftime, 5-2.
Â
That three-goal cushion would hold up in the second half, as the Rams knocked off the Gaels, 10-7.
Â
For Fordham,
Patrick Reyes has two goals and two steals, while
Davis DeFontes and
Andrew Gonzalez had two goals apiece.Â
Bobby Wurtz netted a goal and two steals with
R.J. Simmons,
Patrick Lenihan, and
Eric Minowitz rounding out the scoring with one goal each.Â
Ethan Vandeventer led all players with three assists. In goal,
Noah LeBeau made 12 saves.
Â
In match two, Fordham faced off against the top seed in the tournament, #11 Brown University. While last weekend, the Rams were able to force overtime against Brown, today was a different story as the Bears posted a 13-3 win.
Â
The score was tied at three after the first quarter, which was as close as the game would get, as Brown scored the next ten goals for the 13-3 win.
Â
For Fordham, Simmons netted two goals, while
Peter Bergum had the final marker. In net, Le Beau had six saves over three quarters, with
Patrick Harrigan and
Alex Jahns split the final quarter. Harrigan had one save, while Jahns had three.
Â
With the split, Fordham will play in the third place match against 17
th-ranked St. Francis (NY), where the winner will receive an automatic berth into the CWPA Championship later this month. Game time is set for Sunday at 10:30 AM.
