The Fordham water polo squad completed day one of the Gary Troyer Invitational by splitting their two matches on the day.
In their first match, the Rams upended Occidental by a score of 12-7
Fordham came out firing early, scoring five goals in the first period, two of which came from
Patrick Lenihan, to take a 5-2 lead.
The Rams would score two more goals in the second quarter.
R.J. Simmons and
Mike Hay were responsible for extending the lead as Fordham would head into the half leading 7-3.
Fordham's biggest lead would come with 3:30 remaining in the fourth, as
Cameron Shewchuck scored to make it 12-5. The Rams would surrender two late goals and would take the match by a final score of 12-7.
In match #2, Fordham would fall to Fresno Pacific University by a score of 12-11.
The Rams once again came out of the gate strong, scoring the first two goals of the match, however FPU would answer with two of their own to send the game into the second quarter all squared up at two apiece.
FPU would take an early lead in the second quarter, which they held late into the fourth. Fordham would tie it up 9-9 as Simmons would score with 3:30 remaining in the game, but the Rams could not keep the momentum going. FPU would score and take the lead for good just 12 seconds later and go on to win 12-11.
Ori Raz would lead all scorers, tallying four goals on the day.
Andrew Gonzalez and
R.J. Simmons would also contribute two goals each in the loss.
The Rams are back in action on Saturday, October 4
th, as they play Chapman (3:40 PM ET) and La Verne (7:40 PM ET) as they wrap up their West Coast trip.
