Box Score Bronx, N.Y. (October 12, 2014) – The Fordham University men's tennis team hosted Adelphi today and improved its dual match record to 2-1 with a 5-1 win over the Panthers on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts.
The Rams opened play by taking the doubles point, winning both completed doubles matches.
J.J. Tauil and
Mischa Koran teamed up to take first doubles from Adelphi's Sander Brenner and Justin Vijungco, 8-2, and then
Max Peara and
Pol Giraldez defeated Uladzislau Litvinchu and Chiwete Njokanma at second doubles, 8-6.
Pedro Alonzo and
Joey Brander were ahead of Sebastian Zapata and Ryan Villarruel at third doubles, 7-4, when the match was halted.
Fordham then won the match with four singles victories. Alonzo was the first winner for the Rams, besting Villarruel in straight sets at sixth singles, 6-4, 6-1, and then Tauil defeated Litvinchu at the second position, 6-3, 6-1, to give Fordham a 3-0 lead.
A 7-5, 6-0 win for Peara over Zapata at fourth singles clinched the win for Fordham before Brander fell to Vijungco at the fifth spot, taking the first set, 6-0, but dropping the second, 6-0, and the tiebreaker, 10-7.
Koran earned the final point for Fordham with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Brenner at first singles.
Giraldez and Njokanma were tied at one set each when the match was halted.
The Rams return to action on October 16, when they start play at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships at St. John's University.
