Squash Plays Four Matches at Virginia Tournament

Rams Post 1-3 Record

The Fordham squash team saw its first action of the spring semester this past weekend at the University of Virginia Tournament in Charlottesville, Va.  The Rams took on Georgetown, Notre Dame, the College of Charleston and host Virginia, posting a 1-3 record.
 
Fordham started the tournament against Georgetown, falling by a 9-0 score.  The closet matches were at the top of the ladder at the one and two spots.  Fordham's Kincade Webster fell to the Hoyas' Nick Kourides in four sets, 11-13, 11-6, 11-5, and 14-12 at the #1 slot, while Fordham's Jeremy Keller lost to Georgetown's James Calello in five sets at the #2 slot, 6-11, 11-5, 2-11, 11-2, and 11-6.
 
In match two, Fordham downed Notre Dame, 9-0, as the Rams earned straight set wins in seven of the nine matches.  Webster, Keller, Alex LaVersa, Ross Garlick, Carlos Ortiz, James Potts, and Matthew Crowe were the winners in those matches.
 
Paul Monaghan and Jimmy Shinnick each needed four sets to post their victories over Notre Dame's Hugh Phelan and Clayton Smith, respectively.
 
The Rams' third match saw Fordham fall short against the College of Charleston, 7-2.
 
Besides a default point at the #9 slot, Fordham's lone win was by Webster at the #1 slot, as he defeated Evan Casciato, 11-4, 11-4, and 11-2.
 
Fordham was very competitive up and down the ladder, as the Rams dropped five-set matches at the second and fifth slots, while falling in four sets at the third, fourth, seventh, and eighth slots.
 
In the Rams' final match of the weekend, Fordham took on host Virginia. The Cavaliers notched a 9-0 win over the Rams with seven matches ending in straight sets.
 
Shinnick and Crowe each went four sets in fifth and ninth slot matches, while to Noel Flemmer and Matt Schwartz, respectively.
 
The Fordham squash team will next be in action on February 1, when the Rams host Northeastern at 12:30 PM and NYU at 6:30 PM.
