One of the final fall sport squads started its season on Saturday, as the Fordham water polo team got its season underway at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland. The Rams had a great opening day, pulling out a late 14-13 win over Salem International and an 18-4 victory over Notre Dame College.
The day began with a tight contest against Salem International. The Rams led by two at the half, 8-6, as well as at the end of the third quarter, 11-9. Salem International though would fight its way back to tie the game at 13 with just 48 seconds left.
In the final moments, it was sophomore
Mike Hay scoring with 27 seconds left to give Fordham the 14-13 win. For Hay, it was his fourth goal of the game, setting a new career-high. Also setting a career-high was Fordham's
Nicholas Allen, as he totaled six goals in the contest.
Andrew Gonzalez (2),
Patrick Lenihan, and
Landon Kern rounded out the Rams' scoring in the game.
In net,
Patrick Harrigan and
Eric Mullery each played a half with Harrigan making three saves, while Mullery posted seven big saves to help Fordham clinch the win.
In game two of the day, Fordham was in control from the start against Notre Dame College, opening up a 8-1 lead after two quarters of play, en route to an 18-4 win.
For Fordham, Allen and
Davis DeFontes led the attack with four goals apiece, while newcomer
Ori Raz netted three goals.
Patrick Reyes and
Eric Minowitz each had a pair of markers with
Bobby Wurtz, Hay, and
Ben Clinkinbeard finishing out the Ram scoring.
In goal, Mullery got the start playing two-plus quarters with two saves, followed by
Sean Sullivan (one save) and Harrigan (two saves) to close out the game.
The Fordham water polo team will conclude play at the Navy Invitational on Sunday, September 8
th, as the squad takes on Navy at 9:30 AM and Gannon at 2:10 PM.
