The Fordham men's tennis team hosted its lone matches of the fall season on Saturday, earning a split at the Hawthorn/Rooney tennis courts. The Rams fell in the early match to New York Tech, 4-3, while bouncing back with a 5-2 victory over Adelphi.
In the opening match, New York Tech opened the match by earning the doubles point. Fordham's Kuba Kowlalski and
Matty Najfeld won at first doubles over Tomas Lieb and Julian Marcon, 8-4, but the Bears won at second (8-2) and third (8-4) doubles to pull ahead 1-0 in the match.
The Bears quickly increased the lead to 3-0 with wins at first singles and sixth singles, before Fordham got on the board with a win by
Alastair Barnes at third singles over Jamie Salvador, 6-4, 6-2. The Bears though would wrap up the match with a win at fifth singles.
Fordham did close the final margin of victory to 4-3, earning victories at second and fourth singles. Najfeld defeated Lieb, 6-2, 4-6, and 10-7, while
Michael Puntillo topped Nico Jubera, 6-4, 7-6.
In the nightcap, Fordham began the match by sweeping all three doubles matches. Kowalski and Najfeld won at first doubles, 8-1, over Rich Ferguson and Justin Vijungco, while
J.J. Tauil and Barnes topped Sander Brenner and Vlad Litvinchuk at second doubles, 8-5. Puntillo and
Max Peara completed the sweep at third doubles with an 8-3 win over Chiwete Njokanma and Ryan Villarruel.
In singles action, the Rams took home wins at second, fourth, fifth, and sixth singles. Najfeld topped Ferguson in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, with Puntillo taking down Njokanma, 7-5, 7-6. Tauil defeated Vijungco, 6-1, 6-2, while Peara rounded out the Fordham win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Villarruel.
The Fordham men's tennis team will next be in action on October 4-6, as the Rams compete in the Columbia Invitational.
