Water Polo Opens Competition at the Bison Invitational

Rams Split a Pair of Matches

After a 3-1 start last weekend, the Fordham water polo team was back in action on Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational.  The Rams earned a split on day one, defeating Washington & Jefferson, 12-4, while falling to a very strong Diablo Valley College (Calif.), 13-11.
 
In the opening match of the day, Fordham topped Washington & Jefferson by a score of 12-4.
 
Fordham started the game with a 4-1 lead after the first quarter behind two goals from Nicholas Allen and tallies by Ben Clinkinbeard and Andrew Gonzalez.
 
The Rams extended the lead to 7-2 by halftime with Allen netting his third goal of the game, while Patrick Reyes and Eric Minowitz also scored.
 
After Washington & Jefferson closed to within four at 8-4, the Rams scored four times in the final quarter to clinch a 12-4 win.
 
Allen finished the game with three goals, while Peter Bergum had two, both of which came in the fourth quarter.  Patrick Lenihan and Mike Hay were the final goal scorers for the Rams.  In net, Noah LeBeau made eight saves with Eric Mullery also recording one stop.
 
In game two, a late Fordham rally came up short, as the Rams fell to Diablo Valley College, 13-11.
 
DVC came out firing, taking a 7-1 lead by the end of the first quarter.  The lead bellied out to eight at 13-5 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, before Fordham tried to rally back, scoring six straight goals to end the game, but it was not enough.
 
For Fordham, Lenihan scored four goals to lead the Fordham attack, while Gonzalez added three markers.  Bobby Wurtz, Davis DeFontes, Allen, and Clinkinbeard rounded out the scoring with one goal each.  In goal, LeBeau had six saves, while Mullery made five in the final quarter.
 
The Fordham water polo team wraps up play at the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday with two tough match-ups against RV Mercyhurst at 10:15 AM  and 15th-ranked Bucknell at 3:30 PM. The Bucknell match will be streamed live by clicking here.
