Volleyball Drops a Pair at Winthrop

Hipp and Delsing Tally Career-Highs in Loss

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Despite stellar days from Lisa Hipp and Brennan Delsing, the Rams dropped a pair of decisions on Saturday, falling 3-0 to Winthrop and 3-1 to Tennessee Tech on the final day of the Winthrop Classic.

Hipp, a senior, was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts.

Game One

Coming off a win in their first contest of the season on Friday, the Rams struggled on Saturday afternoon against the host-school of the Winthrop Classic, falling to the Eagles in straight sets.

Hipp led the Rams with 14 points and 14 digs, while classmate Sara Konkel registered 29 assists.

The first set of the Winthrop match started off evenly matched, as the Rams and Eagles traded points until the score knotted at five.  With the score tied, Winthrop took seven of the next nine points, making the score 12-7.  Fordham would narrow the lead down to four, but Winthrop went on to win the set 25-17.

The Rams fared better in the second set than they did in the first, but failed to string together enough points to take a lead.  Winthrop took the set 25-20.

The final set of the match was the most equitable, as the Rams and Eagles played even to an 18-18 score.  Winthrop then scored two consecutive points to take the lead and eventually closed out the set at 25-22.

Game Two

Despite career-highs in kills from Hipp and Delsing, the Rams fell in their second match of the day to Tennessee Tech, 3-1.

Hipp registered 22 kills on the game, while Delsing notched 19.  Delsing also hit .368 for the match, while Konkel tallied 48 assists.

Fordham and Tennessee Tech traded points to open the first set, as a Delsing kill tied the score at four.  From there, however, the Golden Eagles rattled off six unanswered to take a 10-4 lead.  The Rams narrowed the deficit to three, 15-12, later in the set, but TTU used four consecutive points to build the lead back.  Fordham then fired off a 6-1 run to pull within one at 20-19, but the Golden Eagles went on to win the set 25-22.

Fordham answered right back in the second set, taking an early 5-1 lead on kills from Hipp, Delsing and Brianna O'Neil.  The next several plays were evenly matched, but a late Fordham run sealed the deal in the set number two, as the Rams took it 25-19.  Hipp registered five kills in the set, while Delsing had four.

The third set was a fairly back –and-forth affair, as a Hipp kill made the score 12-9 in favor of Tennessee Tech about halfway through the set.  From there, the Golden Eagles scored six in a row to move ahead 18-9.  The Rams would pull within five, but Tennessee Tech closed out the set 25-18.

The Rams jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in set four before TTU worked the score even at six.  The Golden Eagles then tallied five in a row, jumping ahead 11-6.  TTU moved the lead as high as seven at 20-13, but the Rams uncorked a streak of their own, narrowing the lead back down to two at 23-21 with an 8-3 run.  Tennessee Tech, however, was able to close out the set, downing the Rams 25-22.

Fordham will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Morgantown, W. Va., for the Golden Horseshoe Challenge hosted by West Virginia University.
