The Gini Ullery Era got off to a quick start on Friday afternoon, as the Fordham Rams swept Savannah State in convincing fashion at the Winthrop Classic in Rock Hill, S.C., giving the new head coach her first ever collegiate victory.
Set scores were 25-12, 25-12 and 25-15, respectively.
Brennan Delsing led off her sophomore campaign with a big game for the maroon and white. The Chesterfield, Mo., native registered a game-high ten kills and hit .364 for the match.
Freshman Kristen Ostach impressed in her first collegiate match. The Beaver Falls, Pa., product notched five kills on only nine attacks, good enough for a .556 hitting percentage.
Senior Sara Konkel led the Rams with 26 assists, while classmate Maria Rodenberg topped the squad with 11 digs and five service aces. Fellow senior Lisa Hipp also recorded five aces in addition to eight kills.
The Rams came out quickly in the first set, using an early 6-0 run to take a 7-2 lead over the Tigers. Savannah State worked its way back into the set; however, as the Tigers narrowed the Fordham lead to two at 12-10. From there, the Rams went off. A Hipp kill and back-to-back aces from Konkel started a 15-2 Fordham tear. Rodenberg capped off the set with consecutive aces.
The second set shared many similarities with the first, as the Rams jumped out to a 5-1 lead early before the Tigers narrowed the deficit to two at 10-8. Once again though, the Rams went off on a huge scoring run, this time a 10-0 streak highlighted by four kills from Hipp.
After taking the second set by the same margin as the first, the Rams once again found themselves ahead by a 10-8 margin in the third set. Fordham then outscored the tigers 7-2 over the ensuing nine possessions, taking an advantage that would prove insurmountable.
Coach Ullery won't have much time to celebrate her first tally in the win column, as her squad will be back in action twice on Saturday, taking on Winthrop at 12:30 PM and Tennessee Tech at 4:30 PM.
