Football Camp Notes – The Running Backs

Preseason All-American Carlton Koonce returns to lead Rams’ backfield

When talking about the Fordham offensive backfield, the conversation begins with Koonce but it doesn't end there. Besides the senior, the Rams have a group of talented ball carriers including sophomores Jared Crayton and Andrew Erenberg and freshman Kendall Pearcey, along with fullbacks Kevin Soares and Kevin Scanlon.

Koonce, who has received a plethora of preseason awards including being named to the 2013 Walter Payton Award Watch List and a preseason All-American, earned First Team All-Patriot League honors in 2012, rushing 300 times for 1,596 yards, breaking the Fordham single season school rushing mark of 1,477 yards set by Kirwin Watson in 2003. He also led the Rams with 13 rushing touchdowns and was second on the team with 48 receptions for 313 yards and two scores.

Koonce led the Patriot League and was fourth in the NCAA FCS in rushing yards/game (145.1) and had two 200-yard games in 2012, including a 250-yard contest at Columbia where he tied a Patriot League record with a 92-yard touchdown run. Koonce also led the Patriot League and was sixth in the NCAA FCS in all-purpose yards/game, averaging 173.6/contest.

Crayton appeared in five games as a freshman for the Rams, rushing eleven times for 63 yards (5.7 yards/carry) and one touchdown. He also displayed his versatility by returning seven kickoffs for 146 yards (20.9 yards/return) with a long return of 41 yards. A First Team All-Hudson County selection, Crayton was named Hudson County Offensive Player of the Year in 2011.

Erenberg played in ten games as a freshman, both in the backfield and on special teams. A product of Peters Township High School in McMurray, Pennsylvania, he was a First Team All-State selection and First Team All-Conference pick and was named to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Fab 22 team.

Soares returns to action after missing the 2012 season with an injury. A graduate of Croton-Harmon High School in Croton, New York, he was an All-Section pick in football and a two-time All-League selection in high school.

Pearcey is a graduate of Steinbrenner High School in Lutz, Florida, where he was a two-time All-Area Offensive Player of the Year. He earned First Team All-Conference honors in 2012 as well as being placed on the Top 100 in Central Florida list. Over his high school career, Pearcey gained over 3,000 career rushing yards.

Scanlon, who also missed the 2012 season due to injury, moved over to the offensive side of the ball after starting his Fordham career on the defensive line. A graduate of Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, N.J., he helped the Ironmen to a first-ever number one national ranking in 2009, a year in which he was an All-Group selection and team captain.
