April 10, 2013 - West Point, N.Y. - The Fordham University women's tennis squad headed north on Wednesday to West Point and brought home a 5-2 victory over Army, the team's second straight win and the sixth in its last seven matches.
The Rams opened the match on a down note, dropping the doubles point, losing all three doubles matches. But Fordham came roaring back in singles play, taking five of the six singles matches, three in straight sets.
Angelika Dabu, Julie Leong and Anika Novacek all won their singles matches in straight sets with Dabu besting Carolyn Pitman, 6-3 and 7-5 at the third position, Leong defeating Elle Taylor, 6-4 and 6-4, at fifth singles and Novacek taking sixth singles from Margaret Iliev, 6-4 and 6-4.
The other two Fordham singles wins came at the second and fourth positions. At second singles, Sarah Ali dropped the first set to Eva Sung, 7-5, but came back to win the second, 6-3, and the third, 6-2. Bella Genkina also had to go to a third set at fourth singles, winning the first, 6-4, but losing the second, 7-5, before coming back to take the third, 7-5.
Amy Simidian almost made it a clean sweep at singles for the Rams but she fell to Jamila Paul at first singles, 7-6 (4) and 7-6 (5) as both sets going to tiebreakers.
The Rams return to action on Saturday, April 13, as they travel to Washington, D.C., to face George Washington University at 12:00 p.m.
