Boston, Mass. - (March 2, 2013) - The Fordham track & field team took nine entries into this year's ECAC/IC4A Championship, held at Boston University and posted an excellent first day on Saturday. The Rams recorded three qualifiers for Sunday's final, broke two school records, and had one entry earn Second Team All-East honors.
The day began with junior David Fajoyomi scoring the high jump event. He tied a season-best by clearing 6' 11", which was good for second place and Second Team All-East honors.
The other individual entries came in the 500 meter run with Sean Atkinson in the men's competition and Titi Fagade and Kristen Stuart in the women's race, as well as in the women's 5,000 meter run with Anisa Arsenault.
Atkinson began with a school record time of 1:02.72 in the 500 meters, breaking his own record of 1:03.06, set last year. The time qualified him second for Sunday's final.
In the women's 500, Fagade qualified second for the final in a time of 1:12.90, just .01 seconds off her school record, which was set last year, while Stuart placed 12th overall in a season-best time of 1:14.80.
In the women's 5,000 meter, Arsenault posted her best time of the season, clocking in at 17:14.14, good for 20th overall.
The remaining Fordham entries were in the relays, as both 4x800 relay teams qualified for Sunday's final, while the men's 4x400 and distance medley relays had excellent showings.
On the women's side, Fordham's group of Melissa Higgins, Stuart, Mara Lieberman, and Fagade qualified first overall for Sunday's 4x800 final in a season-best time of 8:57.42. The men's relay of John Cosgrove, Brian Walter, Michael Rossi, and Ryan Polo followed by qualifying second for the 4x800 final in a season-best time of 7:32.94.
In the 4x400 relay, the oldest school record at Fordham fell as the 74-year mark of 3:15.2, set by Ralph St. Pierre, Frank Slater, George Leary, and Wes Wallace in 1939, was broken by Atkinson Sam Houston, Lester Taylor and Sean Collins. Fordham's group placed tenth in a school record time of 3:14.75.
The distance medley relay of Jonathan Annelli, Michael Bongiorno, Daniel Green, and Kevin Harvey just missed scoring, as the group placed ninth in a season-best time of 9:58.56.
