Richmond, Virginia - (March 16, 2013) - The Fordham track & field squad opened its outdoor season this past weekend at the VCU Ram Invitational in Richmond, Virginia. The meet would be rain-shortened as the women finished 19 events and the men completing 20. Through those events, Fordham was third in the men's competition, just one point behind host VCU, while the women were sixth.
In the men's competition, fifth-year senior Kevin Fitzgerald was the lone event winner, taking home the 5,000 meter run in 14:58.06. The Rams scored five other runners in the 5K run, which included Nick Synan in third (15:03.04), Kevin Harvey in fifth (15:13.31), Mike Turi in sixth (15:14.13), Jonathan Annelli in seventh (15:18.24), and Quincy O'Connor in eighth (15:27.64).
The Rams also had a solid showing in the 1,500 meter run, with three runners in the top five. Ryan Polo snagged second place in 3:59.12, followed by John Cosgrove in fourth (4:00.25) and Brian Walter in fifth (4:01.51).
Other top individual performers were Sean Atkinson finishing third in the 400 meter dash (49.85), David Fajoyomi placing second in the long jump (22' 9"), Austin Ruiz taking fourth in both the shot put (47' 11") and discus throw (121' 9"), and Keegan Talty registering fifth in the pole vault (13' 9 1/4").
In the men's relays that were completed, the men's team was fourth in the 4x100 relay (42.77) and third in the 4x800 relay (7:54.46).
In the women's competition, Titi Fagade continued her excellent junior season by winning the 400 meter dash in 56.24 seconds, while sophomore Kristen Stuart won the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:02.83.
Junior Anisa Arsenualt led a group of four scorers in the 5,000 meter run, finishing second in 17:46.12. Sarah Glockenmeier and Suzy Sikorski were right behind her in third (18:09.26) and fourth (18:10.44) place, respectively, while Mara Lieberman was sixth (18:15.35).
Other top performers included Christina Machado, taking fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (12:13.19), Melissa Higgins and Christina Vivinetto finishing fifth (4:49.01) and sixth (4:50.64), respectively in the 1,500 meter run, and Courtnay Newman tying for fourth in the high jump (5' 1").
In the relays, Fordham was second in the 4x400 relay in 3:57.41, while the 4x800 relay was third in 9:41.02.
The Fordham track & field team will next be in action on Saturday, March 23rd, as the Rams compete at the West Chester Invitational in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
