The Fordham University women's tennis team traveled up to Hanover, New Hampshire, this past weekend to face Dartmouth College on Saturday and the University at Albany on Sunday, coming away with a split. The Rams defeated Albany, 4-3, while falling to Dartmouth, 6-1.
The Rams opened the Albany contest on Sunday by sweeping the doubles matches. Amy Simidian and Sarah Ali took first doubles from Irene Santos-Bravo and Rocio Lopez Alberca, 8-3, Bella Genkina and Anika Novacek defeated Mireille Hermans and Sarah Iannone at the second position, 8-4, and Julie Leong and Angelika Dabu bested Kirsten Scott and Cheryl Kukkonen at third doubles, 8-1.
Fordham then won the match by taking three of the six singles matches with Dabu, Leong and Novacek winning at third, fifth and sixth singles respectively, all in straight sets. Dabu won at third singles over Hermans, 6-2, 6-3, while Leong and Novacek were victorious at fifth singles and sixth singles over Iannone and Kukkonen, respectively, by identical, 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Ali almost picked up another point for the Rams, dropping the first set at second singles to Lopez Alberca, 7-5, before taking the second, 6-3, to force a tiebreaker. But Ali fell in the tiebreaker, 10-7.
In the Dartmouth match, the Rams dropped the doubles point as Simidian and Ali fell to Katherine Yau and Akiko Okuda, 8-5, at first doubles, Genkina and Novacek were upended by Melissa Matsuoka and Sarah Bessen at the second spot, 8-4, and Leong and Dabu dropped third doubles to Julienne Keong and Janet Liu, 8-5.
In singles action, the Rams picked up their point at the sixth position as Novacek defeated Suzy Tan. Novacek dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to take the second, 6-3 and worked overtime in the tiebreaker before winning, 11-9.
The Fordham women's tennis squad will return to action on Saturday, March 2, as they travel to Amherst, Massachusetts, to face the University of Massachusetts at 12:30 PM.
