2013 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championship Concludes in Rhode Island

Kingston, R.I. - (Feb. 17, 2013) - It was an exciting day of finals on Sunday at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championship, held at Rhode Island's Mackal Fieldhouse, which saw Charlotte capture both the men's and women's team titles. Fordham would finish sixth in the men's competition and tenth in the women's, as the Rams had six All-Atlantic 10 performances.

In the men's competition, Charlotte posted the top score with 190.5 points, followed by Rhode Island (166), Saint Joseph's (78), Butler (68), La Salle (60), Fordham (58), VCU (52), Temple (34), Massachusetts (28.5), Xavier (21), Saint Louis (15), and Richmond (9).

After scoring in just one event on Saturday, the Fordham men posted points in 10 events on Sunday, led by the men's 4x400 relay team. Fordham's squad of Sean Atkinson, Sean Collins, Ian Williams, and Lester Taylor won the final men's event of the competition to receive First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors with a season-best time of 3:18.81.

Atkinson would also earn Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors individually, as he was second in the 500 meter run finals in 1:03.65.

Fordham had three other Second Team All-Conference performances, highlighted by Sam Houston taking second in the heptathlon with 4,829 points. The Rams' junior fell just shy of capturing the Atlantic 10 title by just 84 points to Rhode Island's Trent Baltzell. Houston posted times of 9.19 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles, and 2:45.81 in the 1,000 meters, while clearing 11' 11 3/4" in the pole vault. The day one leader and defending champion in the heptathlon, Andrew Reigstad of Rhode Island was disqualified in the 60 meter hurdles and did not finish the competition.

Junior David Fajoyomi and the men's 4x800 relay were the final Second Team All-Conference honorees. Fajoyomi earned second in the high jump event, clearing 6' 10 3/4", while the men's 4x800 relay of John Cosgrove, Ryan Polo, Daniel Green and Michael Rossi was second in a season-best time of 7:42.60.

Other Rams to score on day two began with Collins taking fifth in the 400 meter dash in 50.07 seconds, while Cosgrove was sixth in the 800 meter run. Polo grabbed fourth place in the 1,000 meter run, posting an IC4A qualifying time of 2:28.40, with Jonathan Annelli taking seventh in the mile run (4:19.63) and Austin Ruiz finishing eighth in the shot put with a season-best mark of 48' 10 3/4".

In the women's competition, Charlotte ran away with the league title with 142.5 points, followed by Rhode Island (89), VCU (86.5), Dayton (76), Richmond (72), Duquesne (60), Saint Louis (55), Temple (52), Butler (39), Fordham (32), La Salle (24), Massachusetts (22.5), Saint Joseph's (15), and Xavier (12.5).

Fordham scored in six women's events on day two, led by junior Titi Fagade, who earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors by taking second in the 800 meter run in 2:14.13. Melissa Higgins also scored in the 800 meters, placing eighth in 2:19.75.

Other individual scorers for Fordham included Kristen Stuart, who was third in the 500 meter run in 1:15.29, Mara Lieberman, who placed fifth in the mile run in a season-best time of 5:02.73, and Courtnay Newman, who was seventh in the high jump, clearing 5' 5".

The final scoring came in the women's 4x800 relay, as Fagade, Higgins, Jillian Brooks, and Stuart finished third in a season-best time of 9:12.69.
