Track & Field Wraps Up Day One of the Metropolitan Outdoor Championship

Piscataway, N.J. - (April 13, 2012) - The 2012 Metropolitan Outdoor Track & Field Championship got underway on Friday in Piscataway, New Jersey, hosted by Rutgers University. After a successful day one, the Fordham men's team is tied for second out of 12 teams, while the women are 4th out of 13 teams.

In the men's competition, Manhattan holds the overall lead with 54.5 points, followed by Fordham and Southern Connecticut State with 31.

Fordham scored big points in the distance events on day one, as three runners scored in the 10,000 meter run, while four scored in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Tim Kazanjian led Fordham's finishers in the 10,000 meter run, taking third in 32:32.70, followed by Nick Synan in fifth place in 32:54.33. Devin Kelly rounded out the Rams' scorers in seventh in 33:38.45.

In the steeplechase, Rich Grandelli won the event for Fordham in 9:32.78, followed by Jonathan Annelli in fourth in 9:39.15. Joe Hartnett (9:48.86) and Matt Collins (9:52.93) rounded out the scorer's in seventh and eighth place, respectively.

The other big story for the men is Sam Houston, who currently leads the decathlon competition with 3,692 points. He finished first in the 400 meters (50.67), high jump (6' 3 1/4"), and shot put (40' 6 3/4"), while tying for first in long jump (22' 11 1/4") and taking third in the 100 meter dash (11.53).

Other competitors for the men were Keegan Talty, who was 8th in the pole vault (13' 3 1/2"), Stephen Courtney, who was 11th in the javelin throw (144' 4"), and Austin Ruiz, who was 12th in the hammer throw (121' 10").

In the women's competition, St. John's leads the overall scoring with 38 points, followed by Ramapo (32), Southern Connecticut State (30), and Fordham (29).

Blair Hassell led the way for the Rams by winning the javelin throw with a mark of 130' 0".

Fordham also had two runners score in both the 10,000 meter run and the 3,000 meter steeple chase. In the 10,000 meters, Mairin O'Connor took fifth in 39:19.16, while Nako Nakatsuka was sixth in 40:15.17. Shannon McKenna was Fordham's last runner in the 10K, placing ninth (42:17.98).

Then, in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Briana Tevnan earned second in a time of 11:33.41, while Christina Machado was fifth in 11:58.53.
