On their final day in Orlando, the 78th-ranked Fordham University women's tennis squad made it a perfect 3-0 on their Spring Break trip, upending Long Island University, 4-2, and Bethune-Cookman, 5-1.
With the wins, the Rams, who are ranked for the first time. improve to 12-3 on the year.
The Rams opened the day with the win over LIU, taking the doubles point by winning the two completed doubles matches. After taking third doubles by default, Sarah Ali and Bella Genkina defeated Lisa Maas and Nancy Zonneveld at second doubles, 8-4, to clinch the point for Fordham. Amy Simidian and Angelika Dabu were leading Sanne Louwers and Taysha Blessington at first doubles when the match was halted.
In singles play, the Rams won three of the five completed matches for the win. Bethany Boyle won at sixth singles by default for the Rams, Genkina upended Lisa Maas at the third position, 7-5, 6-3 (4) and Julie Leong bested Brittany Thompson at fifth singles, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8.
In the Bethune-Cookman match, the Rams again opened play by winning the doubles point, taking two of the three doubles matches. Dabu and Simidian teamed up to take first doubles from Katarina Szaboova and Gvantsa Robakidze, 9-7, while Ali and Genkina were victorious at second doubles over Gaby Chinchilla and Chinatsu Kajiwara, 8-4.
In singles action, Fordham won four of the five completed matches. Simidian defeated Szaboova at first singles, 1-6, 6-1, 10-6, Ali upended Chinatsu Kajiwara at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 6-3, Genkina bested Shereen Peterson-Pau, 2-6, 6-4, 10-4, at fourth singles and Leong won at the fifth position over Chinchilla, 6-1, 7-6.
The Rams will return to action on Thursday, March 22, as they travel to Teaneck, N.J., to face Fairleigh Dickinson University at 3:00 p.m.
